Chapter 11 - The Photograph Behind the Frame.
The hallway video did not show what happened inside the apartment.
It did show enough to damage Evan's claim that Claire invented the entire confrontation.
At 11:48 p.m., Claire appeared in the hallway carrying an overnight bag.
At 11:49, Evan followed and pulled the bag from her hand.
At 11:50, both disappeared back inside.
Claire did not emerge again until shortly after five in the morning.
She was alone then.
Her right arm was held close to her body.
Daniel watched only a brief description from Officer Martin.
He refused to ask Claire to watch the footage.
She had lived it once already.
Later that afternoon, Megan arrived at Daniel's house.
She carried a folder containing printed copies of their old conversations.
Claire opened the door herself.
For a long moment, neither woman spoke.
Then Megan held out her arms.
Claire stepped into them.
Daniel turned away to give them privacy.
The reunion was quiet and imperfect.
That made it feel real.
Megan did not say everything would be fine.
Claire did not apologize for every lost month.
They simply began with the truth.
"I missed you," Megan said.
"I missed myself," Claire replied.
Daniel heard the sentence from the kitchen and nearly broke.
Instead, he made coffee nobody wanted.
Megan had preserved more than messages.
She had screenshots from a night three months earlier when Claire became frightened during an argument.
One screenshot contained a photograph of Daniel's living room.
Claire studied it.
"I did not take that."
Daniel recognized the angle.
It had been photographed from the hallway near his coat closet.
The gray duffel had been hidden less than six feet away.
Officer Martin returned to compare the image with the room.
The perspective matched.
Someone had been inside Daniel's home photographing it.
Then Claire noticed something in the background of the screenshot.
A framed photograph of Rebecca sat on a console table.
The frame was slightly crooked.
Daniel walked to the table.
The frame was still crooked now.
He lifted it.
Behind the photograph was a thin adhesive square.
Officer Martin stepped closer.
"Do not touch that further."
Daniel froze.
The object appeared to be a tiny electronic tracker or recording device.
Claire covered her mouth.
"How long has that been there?"
Daniel did not know.
The device was photographed and collected.
Another search found a similar device beneath the entry table.
A third was attached behind the router cabinet.
Daniel felt his own home transform around him.
Every comfortable object suddenly looked capable of hiding something.
Megan sat beside Claire.
"You were not imagining the feeling of being watched."
Claire stared at the empty space behind her mother's photograph.
"No."
Her voice was almost calm.
"I was being taught not to trust the feeling."
Officer Ruiz arrived with an update from Ryan Cole.
Ryan had surrendered a laptop to investigators.
He said Evan kept folders named for people.
One folder was labeled CLAIRE.
Another was labeled MERCER.
A third folder carried a name Daniel did not recognize.
"Who is Lauren Pierce?" Daniel asked.
Claire's head snapped toward him.
"Evan's ex-girlfriend."
Megan looked alarmed.
"I thought he said she moved overseas."
Claire's face drained of color.
"That is what he told me."
Officer Ruiz exchanged a look with Martin.
"She did not move overseas."
"She lives twenty minutes from here."

Then Ruiz added the detail that changed everything again.
"And she filed a complaint against Evan two years ago."
