Chapter 12 - The Uniform and the Truth.
Daniel had worn his Marine uniform for most of the day without attending the ceremony it was meant for.
By late afternoon, he finally removed the jacket.
He hung it over the back of a chair and sat beside Claire.
Without the insignia and ribbons, he looked less like Sergeant Major Mercer and more like her father.
Claire seemed to notice.
"You missed the ceremony."
"There will be other ceremonies."
"It was your friend's retirement."
Daniel nodded.
"He understands."
Claire looked down.
"I keep costing people things."
Daniel's answer came immediately.
"Stop there."
Claire looked at him.
"Evan's choices cost people things."
"Your need for help is not the problem."
The words were simple, but Claire cried when she heard them.
Daniel allowed the silence to hold them.
A little later, Officer Martin called with permission to share limited information about Lauren Pierce's prior report.
Lauren had described a pattern that sounded painfully familiar.
Evan had monitored her location.
He had isolated her from friends.
He had used alternate numbers to send misleading messages.
He had collected personal documents belonging to her family.
The case had not moved forward at the time because evidence was limited and Lauren eventually stopped participating.
Claire stared toward the window.
"He practiced on someone before me."
Daniel disliked the word practiced, but he understood what she meant.
"This is not about you being foolish."
"It is about a pattern he chose."
Claire took a long breath.
"Can I talk to her?"
Officer Martin said contact would need to be handled carefully.
Lauren might not want involvement.
Claire accepted that immediately.
"Then do not pressure her."
Daniel felt proud of that restraint.
Claire knew exactly what pressure felt like.
She would not reproduce it, even while desperate for answers.
Near sunset, Ryan Cole agreed to provide a full recorded statement.
His account described Evan's growing obsession with controlling appearances.
Evan cared less about what happened than about which version others believed.
He collected screenshots, staged messages, and kept leverage on people around him.
Ryan admitted helping create fake accounts.
He claimed he told himself it was harmless until Claire became pregnant.
Then Evan's behavior changed.
He began talking about Daniel's property and retirement savings.
Ryan said Evan believed Claire would eventually inherit everything.
Daniel felt physically cold.
Claire stared at him.
"He talked about your money?"
"Repeatedly," Officer Martin said.
Ryan claimed Evan wanted to become financially indispensable before the baby was born.
The hidden documents and attempted transfer now had a possible motive.
Claire stood slowly.
"He never wanted a family."
Daniel corrected her gently.
"We cannot know what he wanted at every moment."
Claire looked at him.
"No."
"But I know what he kept choosing."
That distinction was important.
The investigation did not need to read Evan's heart.
It only needed to follow his actions.
Then Officer Martin received another update.
Lauren Pierce had heard Evan's name on a call from an investigator.
She had changed her mind about staying silent.
She was willing to give a new statement.
