Chapter 7 - The Call He Never Expected.

Claire gripped the phone with both hands.
Daniel watched her face change from surprise to disbelief.
"How did you know?"
Megan's voice came through the speaker carefully.
"Because you called me last night."
Claire looked at Daniel.
"I did not call you."
"Someone did from your number."
Megan paused.
"It was Evan."
Officer Martin leaned closer but did not interrupt.
Claire put the phone on speaker with Megan's permission.
"What did he say?"
"He asked whether you had contacted me."
"Then he told me you were confused and needed space."
Claire closed her eyes.
"I was packing to leave him last night."
"I know."
Megan's answer made everyone still.
"You sent me a message at seven twenty-two."
Claire stared at her current phone.
"That is inside the missing hour."
Megan read the message aloud.
It said Claire was scared, was leaving, and would go to Daniel's house.
It also asked Megan to call police if Claire stopped responding.
Claire began to cry silently.
"I do not remember sending that."
Megan's voice softened.
"You also sent a picture of your packed bag."
Officer Ruiz asked whether Megan would preserve the messages.
She agreed immediately.
Then she said something that made Claire sit straighter.
"There was another message at seven thirty-one."
"What did it say?"
Megan hesitated.
"It said everything was fine and I should forget the earlier message."
Claire whispered.
"That was not me."
"I know."
"How?"
Megan took a breath.
"Because it called me Meggie."
Claire looked confused.
Megan continued.
"You have hated that nickname since middle school."
Daniel almost smiled despite everything.
He remembered Rebecca teasing Claire with the same nickname once.
Claire had threatened to move to Canada.
The tiny ordinary memory grounded the room.
Officer Martin asked Megan whether Evan knew the nickname.
"Yes."
"He heard my mother use it at a barbecue last year."
Claire wiped her face.
"Megan, why did we stop talking?"
The silence on the line hurt more than an accusation.
"Because every time I called, you sounded like someone was listening."
Claire closed her eyes.
"And then you told me I was jealous of your relationship."
Claire shook her head.
"Evan wrote that message."
"I know that now."
Megan's voice cracked slightly.
"I should have pushed harder."
Claire answered before Daniel could.
"No."
"You tried."
Daniel recognized how difficult those two words were for his daughter.
They required her to accept that someone had seen trouble before she could name it.
Officer Martin requested Megan's contact details for a formal statement.
Then he turned to Claire.
"There may be enough here to investigate beyond today's incident."
Evan was no longer just a boyfriend telling a different version of an argument.
There were missing devices, altered communications, photographs, and a bag hidden in Daniel's home.
Daniel looked toward the front window.
Evan's car was gone.
For the first time all morning, the street looked ordinary.
Then Claire's phone buzzed.
A new message appeared from an unknown number.
The message contained only a photograph.
May you like
It showed Daniel's house from across the street.
The timestamp was less than one minute old.
