Chapter 3 - The Story He Prepared.

Claire recognized the cracked phone by the faded blue sticker on its case.
Daniel remembered buying that phone for her twenty-fifth birthday.
She had reported it missing after a weekend trip with Evan.
At the time, Evan had helped her search the apartment for hours.
Now the device sat on Daniel's entry table like a witness that had waited patiently.
Officer Martin pulled on a pair of gloves.
"Mrs. Harper, where exactly did you find this?"
"Behind the hedge near my mailbox."
"When?"
"About twenty minutes ago."
Evan scoffed.
"That proves nothing."
Daniel did not look at him.
Claire's attention remained fixed on the phone.
"I never took that phone to his apartment."
Officer Ruiz turned toward her.
"Are you sure?"
"Completely."
"I lost it before I moved in with him."
Evan's voice came faster now.
"She gave it to me."
Claire looked up.
"Why would I give you a dead phone and then spend three days searching for it?"
Evan opened his mouth.
No answer came quickly enough.
Officer Martin placed the phone in an evidence sleeve.
"We are going to document this."
Evan shook his head and looked toward the officers with sudden confidence.
"You are letting them turn a relationship argument into something ridiculous."
Then he reached into his back pocket.
Officer Ruiz immediately raised a hand.
"Slowly."
Evan produced his own phone.
"I have messages from her."
He tapped through a folder and held up the screen.
"Read them."
Officer Martin did not take the device.
"You can show us without handing it over."
Evan scrolled.
The messages appeared angry.
One read that Claire would make him regret everything.
Another said Daniel would destroy him if he ever hurt her.
Claire stared at the screen.
"I did not write that."
Evan gave her a small victorious smile.
"Of course you did."
Daniel felt his anger rise again, but he kept his hands at his sides.
"Can messages be checked for when they were created?"
Officer Martin nodded.
"Usually there are ways to verify records."
Evan's smile weakened.
Claire leaned closer to the screen.
"That number is not mine."
Evan quickly lowered the phone.
Officer Ruiz caught the movement.
"Show it again."
Evan hesitated.
"It is her old number."
Claire shook her head.
"My old number ended in 4419."
Mrs. Harper looked uncomfortable but remained near the doorway.
Daniel remembered something.
"Claire, when did you change numbers?"
"Nine months ago."
"Before you moved in with Evan?"
"Yes."
Officer Martin asked Evan to display the contact information behind the conversation.
Evan refused.
"You are not searching my phone."
"We did not ask to search it," Martin replied.
"We asked you to show the contact you just offered as evidence."
Evan slipped the phone back into his pocket.
"Then I changed my mind."
The tension in the room shifted away from Claire.
For the first time, she was not the person explaining herself.
Daniel noticed her shoulders lower slightly.
Officer Ruiz asked Mrs. Harper to step outside and provide a separate statement.
Then Martin turned to Claire.
"Do you have somewhere safe to stay today?"
"Here."
Daniel answered with her.
Evan smiled again, but this time there was no warmth in it.
"You think this ends because she hides at Daddy's house?"
Officer Martin stepped directly between them.
"Mr. Cole, that is enough."
Evan looked past him at Claire.
"Ask her what is in the nursery drawer."
Claire froze.
Daniel saw the fear return instantly.
"What nursery drawer?"
May you like
Claire's hand moved protectively over her stomach.
"The one I was never supposed to open."
