Chapter 9 - The Message at Midnight.

Daniel opened his banking application under Officer Martin's supervision.
At first, nothing looked wrong.
His checking balance was normal.
His savings accounts were intact.
Then Claire pointed at a pending transfer.
The amount was large enough to make Daniel's throat tighten.
It had been scheduled shortly after midnight.
The destination account was unfamiliar.
Daniel called the bank immediately.
A fraud specialist placed the transfer on hold.
The specialist confirmed that someone had attempted to authenticate using personal information tied to Daniel.
No money had left yet.
Daniel felt relief for only a second.
Then came the question of access.
"How did he know enough to do this?"
Officer Martin looked toward the gray duffel.
The answer seemed to be sitting across the room.
Claire began pacing slowly.
"Evan always asked about your retirement plans."
Daniel remembered joking that Marines never truly retired.
He had not discussed account details.
Claire stopped.
"Wait."
"What?"
"Christmas dinner."
Daniel waited.
"You left your wallet on the counter when you went outside."
"Evan stayed inside."
Daniel remembered the evening.
Rebecca's old recipe cards had been spread across the kitchen.
Claire had cooked too much food.
Evan had volunteered to clean.
Daniel had thought it was thoughtful.
Now he remembered returning to find Evan alone near the counter.
Officer Ruiz asked Claire whether Evan had ever requested photographs of Daniel's identification.
"Not directly."
"But he once asked me to send a picture of Dad's military retirement card."
Daniel stared at her.
"Why?"
"He said he wanted to order a surprise plaque with your service dates."
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
Claire's shame was immediate.
"Dad, I am sorry."
He shook his head.
"No."
"You were trying to do something kind."
The distinction mattered.
Evan had converted kindness into access.
That responsibility belonged to Evan.
Officer Martin received a call and stepped into the hallway.
When he returned, his expression had changed.
"We found the gray sedan."
Claire gripped the back of a chair.
"Where?"
"At a gas station about two miles away."
"The registered owner is Ryan Cole."
Daniel looked at Claire.
Her suspicion had been correct.
Martin continued.
"Ryan agreed to speak with officers."
"He says he wants protection from Evan."
Claire stared at him.
"Protection?"
Officer Martin nodded.
"He claims Evan has been using him to open accounts and create documents."
Daniel felt the case shifting again.
Ryan might be an accomplice.
Ryan might also be the anonymous caller.
"Did he take the picture of this house?"
"He admitted he did."
Claire's expression hardened.
"Why?"
"He says Evan ordered him to prove you were still here."
Daniel stood.
"Where is Evan now?"
Martin's answer came carefully.
"Ryan says Evan planned to go back to the apartment."
Claire immediately looked toward the nursery.
Not Daniel's nursery, but the room she had built somewhere else.
"The locked drawer."
Officer Ruiz nodded.
"We are already sending officers."
Claire's phone buzzed again.
This time the message came from Evan's real number.
"You should have left the drawer closed."
Below it was a second message.
"Now everybody gets to know what you did."
Claire stared at the screen.
"What I did?"
Daniel saw confusion give way to fear.
May you like
She whispered the next words.
"He is going to make me look like the criminal."
