Chapter 4 - The Phone in the Drawer.

The nursery had been Claire's favorite room when she first moved in with Evan.

She had painted the walls a soft cream color and chosen tiny wooden stars for the ceiling.

By the time she left, she rarely entered unless Evan was away.

Daniel listened as his daughter explained this at the kitchen table.

The officers had asked Evan to remain on the front porch while they finished taking statements.

He could still be seen through the glass.

His presence made every word harder for Claire.

"There is a locked drawer beneath the changing table," she said.

"Who locked it?"

"Evan."

"What did he say was inside?"

"Work papers."

Daniel frowned.

"What does Evan do for work?"

"Sales."

Claire gave a humorless laugh.

"Nothing that belongs in a baby's room."

Officer Martin wrote something in his notebook.

"Why did he mention the drawer just now?"

Claire rubbed her thumb along the edge of the table.

"Because last week I found the key."

Daniel waited.

"I opened it."

Her eyes met his.

"There was another phone inside."

The cracked phone from Mrs. Harper suddenly felt less mysterious.

"Was it yours?"

"No."

"Did you look at it?"

Claire nodded.

"It had pictures of my car."

Daniel went still.

"Pictures from where?"

"Outside the clinic."

"Outside your house."

"Outside my office before I stopped working."

Officer Ruiz stopped writing.

"Were they taken by Mr. Cole?"

"I do not know."

Claire's voice dropped.

"There were also screenshots of my messages with Dad."

Daniel's skin went cold.

He remembered dozens of ordinary conversations with Claire.

He remembered her cancelling lunches because she was tired.

He remembered invitations she never answered.

He had believed pregnancy and work explained the distance.

Now each missed call looked different.

"Why did you not take the phone?"

Claire's expression tightened.

"I heard Evan coming upstairs."

"So I put it back."

"Then what happened?"

"He asked why I was in the nursery."

"I said I was folding clothes."

She looked toward the front porch.

"He smiled like he knew I was lying."

Daniel wanted to promise her that none of this would follow her into his house.

He knew better than to make promises before facts were secured.

Officer Martin asked whether she would consent to returning with officers for essential belongings.

Claire immediately shook her head.

"Not while he is there."

Daniel reached across the table but stopped before touching her hand.

Claire noticed and placed her hand over his.

"I need the baby's medical folder."

"And my medication."

Officer Martin nodded.

"We can arrange a civil standby and keep you separated."

From the porch, Evan suddenly knocked on the glass.

He held up his phone.

"Her mother is calling me," he announced through the door.

Daniel's expression changed.

Claire stared at him.

"Mom would never call Evan."

Daniel looked toward Officer Ruiz.

"My wife died four years ago."

The room became absolutely still.

May you like

Evan looked down at the phone in his hand.

For the first time, he seemed to realize he had made a mistake he could not explain away.
