Chapter 2 - The Doorway Witness.

Officer Martin bent and picked up the silver key without taking his eyes off Evan.

Claire stared at it as though it had spoken.

She had searched for that key for three weeks.

Evan had insisted she must have misplaced it.

"That is mine," Claire said.

Officer Ruiz glanced toward Evan.

"Why is her key in your pocket?"

Evan recovered enough of his confidence to shrug.

"We live together."

Claire shook her head.

"No, we do not anymore."

The words were quiet, but they changed the room.

Daniel looked at his daughter.

"When did you leave?"

"This morning."

"When did you decide?"

Claire hesitated.

Evan laughed once under his breath.

"She says things when she is upset."

Officer Martin's expression hardened.

"Mr. Cole, let her answer."

Evan pressed his lips together.

Claire sat on the edge of the sofa.

Her overnight bag remained upright beside her knees.

"I told him I wanted to stay with Dad for a while."

Daniel felt a cold weight settle in his stomach.

"You never told me."

"I tried."

Claire reached for her phone, then stopped.

"Every time I called, Evan was suddenly in the room."

Evan rolled his eyes.

"That sounds dramatic."

Officer Ruiz stepped closer to him.

"You have been asked once already."

Silence followed.

Daniel crouched beside Claire so that he was not towering over her.

"Start wherever you can."

Claire stared at her hands.

"At first he only wanted to know where I was."

She swallowed.

"Then he wanted pictures to prove it."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"Pictures of what?"

"The grocery store."

"Work."

"My doctor's office."

"Your house."

Daniel looked toward Evan.

Evan stared back with studied indifference.

Claire continued before fear could stop her.

"He said it was because he worried about me."

"Then he started checking the mileage on my car."

"Then my bank app."

"Then my messages."

Daniel's hand tightened over his knee.

"And the bruises?"

Claire closed her eyes.

"Last night I packed a bag."

"He took it away from me."

Her voice broke, but she kept going.

"I reached for it."

"He grabbed my arm too hard."

Evan suddenly stepped forward.

"That is not what happened."

Both officers shifted between him and the sofa.

Daniel remained where he was.

That restraint seemed to frustrate Evan more than anger would have.

"She came at me," Evan said.

Claire looked up in disbelief.

"I was seven months pregnant and carrying a laundry bag."

Officer Martin asked another question.

"Did anyone else see the argument?"

Claire shook her head.

Then a woman's voice came from outside the open front door.

"I did."

Everyone turned.

Daniel's neighbor, Mrs. Harper, stood on the porch holding a paper grocery bag.

Her expression was pale but determined.

"I heard her crying in the driveway before sunrise."

Evan's face changed again.

Mrs. Harper stepped inside only after Officer Ruiz invited her.

"And I saw Mr. Cole take something from her car."

Claire looked at Evan.

"What did he take?"

Mrs. Harper reached slowly into her grocery bag.

"I think he dropped this when he crossed my yard."

She placed a cracked black smartphone on the entry table.

May you like

Claire stopped breathing.

It was the phone she thought she had lost six months earlier.
