Chapter 14 - The Door Opens.

By the next morning, the Mercer house no longer felt like a command post.
It felt like a home under repair.
Daniel had replaced the compromised router and checked every room with professionals.
Claire had slept for almost six uninterrupted hours.
That alone felt like progress.
She came downstairs wearing one of Rebecca's old cardigans over her maternity dress.
Daniel noticed but said nothing.
Some choices did not need commentary.
Breakfast was interrupted by a call from Officer Martin.
Investigators had secured additional evidence linking Evan to the attempted bank transfer.
Ryan's laptop contained drafts of the authentication questions.
A photograph of Daniel's identification had been stored in Evan's folder.
Records also connected one of the alternate numbers to an account Evan controlled.
The case was no longer built on a single argument in a living room.
It had become a documented network of choices.
Claire listened quietly.
"What happens now?"
Martin explained that legal decisions would move through the appropriate process.
He did not promise a particular outcome.
Claire seemed relieved by the honesty.
She had lived too long with someone who promised certainty whenever he wanted control.
After the call, Daniel asked whether she wanted to stay at his house permanently.
Claire smiled faintly.
"For a while."
Daniel nodded.
"For a while is enough."
She looked surprised.
"You are not going to tell me what I should do next?"
"No."
"Why not?"
Daniel considered the question.
"Because I almost made that mistake yesterday."
Claire frowned.
He continued.
"When I saw your arm, I wanted to solve everything with force."
"That would have made me feel powerful for ten seconds."
"It would not have given you your life back."
Claire looked toward the doorway where he had grabbed Evan.
Daniel followed her gaze.
"I am sorry you had to see me lose control."
Claire studied him for a moment.
"You stopped."
"The officers told me to stop."
"And you did."
Daniel accepted the distinction without defending himself.
"I still should have handled it better."
Claire nodded.
"Then we both get to learn something."
Daniel smiled for the first time in twenty-four hours.
Later, Megan arrived with paint samples for the guest room.
Claire wanted to turn it into a temporary nursery.
Daniel pretended not to notice that every sample looked nearly identical.
"This one is warmer," Claire insisted.
"That one is cream."
"They are all cream."
Megan laughed.
The sound filled the house without permission.
Daniel realized how quiet the rooms had become over the previous months.
At noon, there was a knock at the front door.
Claire froze.
Daniel did not move toward the door until he checked the camera.
Lauren Pierce stood outside holding a small envelope.
Claire had never met her.
She looked at Daniel.
"Do I have to talk to her?"
"No."
"Can I?"
"Yes."
Claire opened the door herself.
Lauren did not step inside.
She simply handed Claire the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten note.
It contained one sentence.
"The day you stop explaining his behavior is the day your own voice starts coming back."
Claire read it twice.
Then she looked up, but Lauren was already walking toward her car.
Claire remained in the doorway.
May you like
The same doorway had held fear the day before.
Now it held open air.
