Chapter 1 - THE NAME ON THE LINE

Grace Bennett had imagined the first hour of her daughter's life a thousand times.

She had imagined Ethan crying when he saw the baby.

She had imagined his hand around hers.

She had imagined the three of them becoming a family the moment the nurse placed their daughter against her chest.

Instead, she was standing barefoot in a hospital corridor with dried tears on her cheeks and a newborn trembling against her heart.

The corridor smelled like antiseptic and cold air.

The fluorescent lights made everything look harsher than it was.

Ethan stood twenty feet away in a tailored blue suit that looked absurdly polished for a man who had become a father less than an hour earlier.

Vanessa Vale stood beside him in a red dress with one hand wrapped around the handle of a designer handbag.

Grace stared at them because her exhausted mind still refused to accept what her eyes were seeing.

Vanessa was not supposed to be there.

Vanessa was Ethan's corporate attorney.

Vanessa was also the woman Grace had found in Ethan's hotel room three weeks before labor began.

Ethan had called it a misunderstanding.

He had called Grace emotional.

He had called pregnancy hormones dangerous.

Now Vanessa was walking beside him like she had already won something.

Grace tightened the pink blanket around her daughter.

"Ethan."

He stopped but did not turn around.

"You haven't even held her."

His shoulders stiffened.

Vanessa looked back first.

Her expression contained no shame.

It contained irritation.

Ethan finally faced Grace.

"Call me when you can think clearly."

Grace felt the words land harder than a shout.

"Think clearly about what?"

"About what happens next."

"She is your daughter."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"That is exactly the kind of statement you need to stop making until we have facts."

Grace went cold.

"What facts?"

Vanessa touched Ethan's sleeve.

"We're going to be late."

Grace looked from Vanessa to Ethan.

"Late for what?"

Ethan ignored the question.

He turned away again.

Grace tried to follow him, but pain tore across her abdomen and forced her shoulder against the pale green wall.

The baby stirred in her arms.

Grace lowered her face toward the tiny pink cap.

"I'm sorry."

Her voice broke.

"I'm so sorry."

Ethan and Vanessa continued toward the elevator.

Neither of them looked back.

A nurse passed Grace with a stack of warm blankets and slowed when she saw the expression on her face.

"Ma'am, do you need help?"

Grace opened her mouth.

She did not know how to answer.

Help with what?

Help making her husband turn around?

Help erasing the image of Vanessa standing beside him in the hospital where their daughter had just been born?

Help understanding why the man who had spent months painting the nursery had not once asked whether Sophie was breathing well?

Grace shook her head.

The nurse hesitated.

Then she glanced toward Ethan and Vanessa.

Something like recognition crossed her face.

"I'll get your nurse."

"No."

Grace's voice came out sharper than she intended.

The nurse stopped.

Grace lowered her voice.

"Please don't make this a scene."

The nurse looked at the newborn.

"It already looks like one."

She walked away anyway.

Grace hated the pity in the woman's eyes.

She hated that strangers could see what she had spent three weeks pretending was not real.

Three weeks earlier, Grace had opened a hotel door using Ethan's spare key because he had forgotten his laptop before a Bellamy conference.

She had expected an empty room.

Instead, Vanessa had stepped out of the bathroom in Ethan's shirt.

Ethan had reacted with anger before Grace could even process the betrayal.

"You had no right to come here unannounced."

That sentence had stayed with Grace because it was so backward that it almost worked.

By the time she reached the elevator, she was apologizing for being upset.

Ethan had followed her home and spent two hours explaining that nothing physical had happened.

Vanessa had changed clothes because wine spilled on her dress.

The room had been booked for corporate preparation.

Grace had walked in during the one moment that looked terrible.

Every explanation had been technically possible.

Together, they had been ridiculous.

Grace had wanted the marriage badly enough to accept ridiculous.

Now she watched the same woman walk away with the same man while Grace held their newborn alone.

Sophie moved beneath the pink blanket.

Grace looked down.

The baby's eyelashes were almost colorless.

Her nose was tiny and slightly crooked from delivery.

Grace had never seen anything more perfect.

"Whatever he does, you don't have to earn your place here."

She whispered it to the baby because she could not yet say it to herself.

At the end of the corridor, the elevator doors opened.

Ethan stepped toward them.

For one irrational second, Grace thought he might turn around.

He did not.

Vanessa did.

She looked back at Grace and gave the smallest possible smile.

It was not triumphant enough for anyone else to notice.

Grace noticed.

She would remember it later.

Then a man stepped out from the opposite end of the corridor.

He was tall enough to change the shape of the space around him.

His black double-breasted suit was perfectly cut.

Dark tattoos climbed from his hands beneath his cuffs, traced the sides of his neck, and touched one cheekbone.

His black hair was slicked back.

His expression was hard enough to make a passing orderly move aside without being asked.

He walked directly toward Grace.

For one second, she wondered if he was hospital security.

Then he passed Ethan and Vanessa without slowing.

His eyes followed Ethan for half a heartbeat.

Contempt flickered across his face.

"He's a coward."

Grace looked up.

The man's voice was deep and controlled.

She was too exhausted to be afraid of him.

She was too angry to be polite.

"And what kind of man are you?"

He looked down at the newborn.

Something in his face changed.

The hard line of his mouth softened.

His shoulders remained squared, but his eyes lost their edge.

"The kind who never leaves a child unprotected."

Grace gave a broken laugh.

"That's a convenient thing to say in a maternity ward."

"I didn't come here for convenience."

He reached inside his suit.

Grace instinctively stepped back.

He stopped immediately.

Then he slowly removed a black leather folder and opened it.

Inside was a hospital registration worksheet clipped over several legal-looking forms.

The top page read BIRTH CERTIFICATE INFORMATION.

Grace stared at it.

"What are you doing?"

The man uncapped a sleek black pen with his tattooed thumb.

"Buying you time."

"From what?"

He signed his name on the blank line labeled FATHER INFORMATION.

Grace's mouth fell open.

"Are you insane?"

He capped the pen.

"Possibly."

"You can't just sign that."

"This is the hospital worksheet, not the final state certificate."

He looked toward the elevator where Ethan had disappeared.

"But the records office will freeze the filing if the parent information is disputed."

Grace clutched the baby closer.

"Why would I need the filing frozen?"

He handed her the folder.

"Because your husband filed an emergency custody petition at 6:12 this morning."

Grace stopped breathing.

"I gave birth at 6:40."

"I know."

"How could he file for custody before she was born?"

The man's gaze hardened again.

"Because this was planned before you ever reached the hospital."

Grace looked down at his signature.

LUKA MORETTI.

The name meant nothing to her.

His next words did.

"My name is Luka Moretti."

May you like

He lowered his voice.

"And if Ethan gets what he filed for, you could lose your daughter before sunset."
