Chapter 13 - THE DNA RESULT

The first night after the attempted abduction, Grace refused to put Sophie in a separate room.

She placed the bassinet beside the bed and left the lamp on.

Every time Sophie made a sound, Grace woke with her heart racing.

At two in the morning, she heard footsteps in the hallway and reached for the emergency button Luka had placed beside the nightstand.

The door opened slowly.

Luka stood there holding a bottle warmer.

Grace stared at him.

"What are you doing?"

"Your security officer said the baby was awake."

"So you brought a bottle warmer?"

"It seemed useful."

Grace looked at the machine in his tattooed hand.

"Do you know how to use it?"

"No."

"Then it is decorative."

He looked offended.

"I can read instructions."

Grace laughed quietly.

It was the first laugh since the fire.

Luka placed the warmer on the dresser.

"Helen is under federal protection."

Grace's smile disappeared.

"And Tessa?"

"Concussion."

"She will recover."

"Linda?"

"In custody."

"The driver?"

"Talking."

Grace looked at Sophie.

"I almost lost her because I ran toward the fire instead of checking the bassinet first."

Luka's answer was immediate.

"No."

"I did."

"You reacted to the threat they designed you to react to."

"That is not failure."

Grace looked at him.

"You always have a sentence ready."

"Occupational hazard."

She almost smiled again.

Then she noticed his burned hand.

"Show me."

"It's nothing."

"That is what men say before needing stitches."

Luka reluctantly held out his hand.

The burn crossed two knuckles.

Grace found a first-aid kit in the bathroom.

"Sit."

He obeyed.

That surprised both of them.

Grace cleaned the burn while Sophie slept.

The intimacy of the small task made the room feel strange.

"How did this happen?"

"I moved the heating device away from the curtain before the extinguisher arrived."

Grace looked up.

"You went into the nursery before you knew Sophie wasn't there."

Luka did not answer.

Grace understood anyway.

He had thought her daughter was inside.

He had gone toward the fire.

The knowledge lodged somewhere deep in her chest.

She finished wrapping his hand.

"There."

Luka looked at the bandage.

"You wrap better than my medic."

"My father taught me."

Silence settled between them.

Samuel was present even in the smallest things.

At three-thirty, Luka left the room.

Grace finally slept for ninety minutes.

At dawn, Maya called about the bank.

The bank insisted Ethan had presented a court order.

The order was real.

It was also limited to inspection of marital financial records.

Somehow, Peter Lang had convinced a bank officer that Box 317 fell within that category.

By the time Maya obtained an emergency injunction, the box had been emptied.

Grace sat in the courthouse hallway with Sophie asleep against her.

"He took my father's journal."

Maya sat beside her.

"We have copies of the letter and some of the drive."

"Not the encrypted files."

"Luka's team made a forensic image before we left the bank."

Grace looked up.

"They did?"

Maya smiled faintly.

"He is irritatingly thorough."

Grace looked down the corridor.

Luka stood near the elevator speaking to an investigator.

He had changed shirts after the fire.

His left cuff was open.

A burn mark crossed the back of his hand.

Grace had not noticed when he got it.

She wondered how many things he did without telling anyone.

Then she remembered that this was exactly why she was angry with him.

The court clerk opened the hearing room.

The new DNA collection was simple.

A technician swabbed Ethan.

She swabbed Grace.

She swabbed Sophie's cheek while Grace held her.

Luka was not tested.

Ethan's attorney had requested it.

The judge refused.

"Mr. Moretti is not claiming biological paternity."

The words should have settled something in Grace.

They did not.

Two days later, the results came back.

Grace was summoned to Maya's office.

Rain streaked the windows.

Sophie slept in a portable bassinet.

Luka stood beside the conference table.

Maya held a sealed report.

"Grace, we have the court-certified result."

Grace looked at Ethan's name on the cover sheet.

"Just tell me."

Maya took a breath.

"Ethan Cole is excluded as Sophie's biological father."

Grace closed her eyes.

She had expected it.

Hearing it still felt like falling.

"I never cheated."

"I know."

"The whole world is going to think I did."

Maya did not insult her by pretending otherwise.

"For a while, some people will."

Grace looked at Luka.

"Say something."

His face was unreadable.

"You know the truth."

"That doesn't stop a headline."

"No."

"It doesn't stop Ethan from calling me a liar."

"No."

"It doesn't stop Sophie from one day reading all of this."

Luka's expression changed.

"Then one day she will also read what you did next."

Grace looked at him.

"What am I supposed to do next?"

"Stop defending yourself against a lie that somebody else designed."

"Make them defend what they did."

Grace sat very still.

The sentence settled into her.

She had spent days reacting.

Ethan filed.

Grace answered.

Vanessa leaked.

Grace denied.

Peter altered.

Grace proved.

Everyone else moved first.

Grace was done moving second.

"Call a press conference."

Maya raised an eyebrow.

"That is not what I expected you to say."

"Good."

"What are you going to tell them?"

"The truth."

Luka shook his head once.

"Not yet."

Grace turned toward him.

"Excuse me?"

"Helen is not secure enough to go public."

"The clinic records are incomplete."

"Charles Vale still has people inside Bellamy."

Grace stood.

"You don't get to decide when I speak."

Luka's jaw tightened.

"I am trying to keep you alive."

"My father tried that by keeping secrets."

"Look where it got him."

The words hit harder than Grace intended.

Luka went completely still.

Maya closed her eyes briefly.

Grace regretted it immediately.

She also refused to take it back.

"I will not disappear behind your security company while Ethan tells the world I cheated and lost my mind."

Luka said nothing.

Grace turned to Maya.

"Can I legally discuss my own DNA result?"

"Yes."

"Can I discuss the forged medical records?"

"Yes, carefully."

"Can I say Bellamy is conducting an internal investigation?"

"Only if the board authorizes one."

Grace looked at her.

"I control fifty-one percent."

Maya smiled slowly.

"Yes, you do."

Before the press conference, Grace spent twenty minutes alone in her grandfather's old office.

Nothing had changed since Arthur Bellamy's death.

His books remained aligned by height.

His brass desk clock still ran three minutes fast.

A framed photograph showed Grace at twelve years old standing beside her mother and father at a Bellamy charity gala.

Arthur stood behind them with one hand on Grace's shoulder.

Grace picked up the photograph.

She remembered asking her grandfather why he worked so much.

"Because thousands of people eat because this company works."

At twelve, Grace had thought that sounded noble.

At twenty-five, she understood the danger in a man believing thousands of lives justified any private decision.

The office door opened.

Luka stood there.

"Maya sent me."

"Does Maya always send six-foot-three tattooed reminders?"

"Only for important clients."

Grace put down the photograph.

"I am scared."

It was the first time she had admitted it directly.

Luka did not tell her not to be.

"I know."

"What if I freeze?"

"Then breathe."

"What if they ask something I cannot answer?"

"Say you cannot answer it."

"What if they call me a liar?"

Luka stepped closer.

"People who need you to be ashamed will call honesty many things."

"That does not change what it is."

Grace studied him.

"Did my father teach you that too?"

"No."

"Prison diversion counselor."

Grace laughed.

"Good to know your wisdom has multiple sources."

Luka smiled.

Then he became serious.

"You do not have to do this today."

Grace looked through the office window at the gathering reporters below.

"Yes, I do."

"Ethan has spent years deciding what version of me other people see."

"If I wait until every fact is perfect, he gets another week to define me."

Luka nodded.

"Then define yourself."

Grace walked toward the door.

She stopped beside him.

"Will you stand where I can see you?"

The request surprised him.

"Yes."

"Not beside me."

"I need to do this myself."

"I know."

"Just where I can see you."

Luka nodded.

"Done."

That was exactly where he stood when Grace walked to the podium.

The press conference happened at Bellamy Medical Holdings the next morning.

Grace wore a simple navy dress.

She carried Sophie to the podium herself.

Luka remained offstage.

Cameras flashed.

Reporters shouted.

Grace raised one hand.

The room quieted.

"My husband is not my daughter's biological father."

The room erupted.

Grace waited.

Then she continued.

"I also did not cheat on him."

More shouting.

"My daughter was conceived through fertility treatment arranged by my husband at a Bellamy-owned clinic."

"The clinic records are now under independent forensic investigation."

"So are forged entries in my hospital chart and an emergency custody petition filed before my daughter was born."

The room went still.

Grace looked directly into the cameras.

"For three days, I have been asked whether I am unstable."

"Today I am asking a different question."

"Why did so many powerful people need me to look unstable?"

A reporter raised his hand.

"Are you accusing Ethan Cole of conspiracy?"

Grace looked toward the back of the room.

Ethan had entered.

Vanessa stood beside him.

Grace smiled faintly.

"I'm inviting him to explain himself."

Ethan pushed through the reporters.

"Gladly."

He held up a folder.

"Because Grace left out one important fact."

Grace's pulse quickened.

Ethan turned toward the cameras.

May you like

"Her father personally authorized use of donor M-17."

Then he held up a consent form bearing Samuel Bennett's signature.
