Chapter 16 - THE BOARDROOM TRAP

Grace kept the conference-room door closed.

Luka remained on the other side of the table.

For the first time since the hospital corridor, he looked uncertain.

Grace almost laughed at the irony.

"You owned the fertility clinic."

"A holding company I controlled owned it."

"That is the kind of sentence people use when they want a lie to sound technically true."

Luka accepted the accusation.

"Then I will say it plainly."

"Yes."

"I owned it."

Grace felt anger rise again.

"When?"

"Fourteen years ago, the clinic was nearly bankrupt."

"I was twenty-one and making my first medical-services investments."

"I bought the debt, reorganized it, and sold the clinic to Bellamy three years later."

Grace stared at him.

"Why did my father know so much about it?"

Luka looked down at his scarred left wrist.

"Because he sent me there."

Grace said nothing.

"After the injuries he treated when I was seventeen, I developed complications."

"One of the surgeons warned me there was a chance I might not be able to have children later."

"Samuel insisted I preserve a sample before another operation."

Grace's heart beat harder.

"At that clinic."

"Yes."

The room became very quiet.

"Was your sample still there when Bellamy bought it?"

Luka did not answer quickly enough.

"Luka."

"It should not have been."

Grace felt a chill move across her skin.

"That is not what I asked."

"I requested destruction before the sale."

"Did you receive confirmation?"

"Yes."

"From who?"

"The laboratory director at the time."

"Name?"

Luka's jaw tightened.

"Charles Vale."

Grace stood so quickly the chair rolled backward.

"You have got to be kidding me."

"I wish I were."

"Did you know Charles ran the clinic?"

"Not when I bought the debt."

"I was using an investment manager."

"By the time I learned, I was already preparing to sell."

Grace paced toward the window.

"So my father says M-17 is a person."

"Your sample was stored at the same clinic."

"Charles Vale controlled the archive."

"And you somehow never thought those things might be related?"

"Of course I thought it."

Luka's voice sharpened for the first time.

"I also thought saying it without evidence would put one more impossible fear into the head of a woman who had given birth forty-eight hours earlier."

Grace turned.

"You still do not get to choose which fears I am allowed to have."

Luka's anger disappeared as quickly as it came.

"You're right."

That answer stopped her.

He continued.

"I should have told you the moment M-17 appeared."

"I did not because I was afraid of what it might mean."

Grace looked at him.

"For Sophie?"

"For all of us."

The implication hung between them.

Grace hated that her pulse changed.

She hated even more that part of her wanted to know.

"Take a DNA test."

Luka's face went still.

Grace immediately shook her head.

"No."

"What?"

"No."

She pressed both hands to the table.

"Not yet."

"I just told you to do it, and I changed my mind."

"Because I refuse to let Charles Vale decide the next move again."

Maya entered before Luka could respond.

"Good."

She placed a stack of board resolutions on the table.

"Because I have a move for you."

Grace read the first page.

It was a proposed resignation of Grace as voting trustee of the Bennett Successor Trust.

"Absolutely not."

Maya smiled.

"You are not signing it."

"You are making everyone think you will."

Luka understood first.

"A bait meeting."

Maya nodded.

"Charles has avoided direct contact because he can let Ethan, Vanessa, Peter, and the clinic staff take the risk."

"If Grace announces she is willing to resign in exchange for the charges and custody fight ending, Charles may come out to control the transfer personally."

Grace looked at the document again.

"And if he does?"

"We make him talk."

The board meeting was scheduled for Friday night.

Grace insisted it take place in Bellamy's old executive boardroom, the room her grandfather had ruled for thirty years.

She wore black.

Luka stayed in a secure room one floor below with federal investigators.

Maya sat beside Grace.

Ethan arrived first.

He looked smug enough to make Grace's skin crawl.

Vanessa came next.

She looked nervous.

Charles Vale arrived last.

Grace had seen him at family funerals and charity events without ever understanding why her grandfather's eyes became cold around him.

He was sixty-eight, silver-haired, elegant, and calm.

He looked nothing like a man who had spent decades poisoning a family from the edges.

"Grace."

"Charles."

He glanced toward Sophie, who was with a court-approved caregiver in a secure room upstairs.

"I am sorry things became so unpleasant."

Grace almost admired the audacity.

"My daughter was nearly kidnapped."

"Yes."

"Unpleasant."

Charles ignored the sarcasm.

"You have a document for me."

Grace slid the fake resignation across the table.

"I want Ethan to drop the custody petition."

"I want the public attacks stopped."

"I want the company left alone."

Charles read the first page.

"And in exchange?"

"I resign as voting trustee."

Ethan smiled.

Vanessa did not.

Charles looked at Grace for a long moment.

"You finally understand."

"Understand what?"

"That Bellamy was never meant for you."

Grace forced herself to breathe normally.

"Who was it meant for?"

Charles smiled.

"People willing to do what ownership requires."

Maya spoke.

"Including falsifying medical records?"

Charles looked at her.

"Careful, counselor."

"That sounds threatening."

"It sounds experienced."

Grace leaned forward.

"Did you order Peter Lang to change my chart?"

Charles did not answer.

Ethan shifted in his chair.

Vanessa whispered.

"Dad."

Charles ignored her.

Grace continued.

"Did you order Linda Price to sedate me?"

"No one ordered anyone to harm you."

Maya's eyes flicked toward Grace.

It was the first useful sentence.

Grace pressed.

"Then what were they ordered to do?"

Charles smiled faintly.

"Create a record consistent with an unstable mother."

Ethan's face changed.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Grace kept her voice steady.

"Before or after my daughter was born?"

"Timing became difficult when you went into labor early."

Grace's stomach turned.

There it was.

A confession disguised as arrogance.

Charles placed the resignation back on the table.

"Sign."

Grace picked up the pen.

Ethan leaned forward.

Vanessa looked ill.

Grace lowered the tip toward the page.

Then every screen in the boardroom turned on at once.

The live video showed federal agents waiting downstairs.

Charles's face changed for the first time.

Grace set down the pen.

"You were right about one thing."

"I finally understand."

The boardroom doors opened.

Agents entered.

Charles did not move.

Ethan stood so quickly his chair tipped over.

Vanessa whispered one word.

"No."

Then Charles looked at his daughter.

"Tell them it was Vanessa's plan."

Vanessa stared at him.

Something inside her broke visibly.

"Dad?"

Charles did not even look at her.

"She drafted the petition."

"She was sleeping with Ethan."

"She had the motive."

Vanessa's face drained of color.

Grace watched a lifetime of loyalty collapse in three sentences.

Then Vanessa stood.

"You want motive?"

She reached into her handbag.

An agent moved toward her.

Vanessa raised one hand.

"It's paper."

She pulled out a sealed envelope.

"Then start with the man who survived Samuel Bennett's crash."

She threw the envelope onto the table.

May you like

On the front was written one name.

PETER LANG.
