Chapter 4 - ROOM 614

By noon, Room 614 had become a crime scene without yellow tape.

Maya photographed the chart entry.

Luka's investigators copied door-access records.

Hospital legal counsel arrived and immediately began using phrases like internal review and potential system compromise.

Grace understood what those phrases meant.

Nobody wanted to say someone inside the hospital had helped Ethan.

Sophie slept through most of it.

Grace envied her.

A young nurse brought food and refused to leave until Grace ate half a bowl of soup.

Luka stood by the window with his phone pressed to his ear.

He spoke quietly.

"Find Price."

He listened.

"No, do not approach her."

"I want to know who she calls first."

Grace put down the spoon.

"You do that a lot."

Luka ended the call.

"Do what?"

"Tell people to follow other people."

"Occupational hazard."

"You make it sound normal."

"It is normal in my occupation."

Grace shook her head.

"My life was normal yesterday."

Luka looked at her.

"Was it?"

The question irritated her because she did not know the answer.

Three weeks earlier, she had found Ethan with Vanessa.

Two weeks earlier, the brakes on Grace's car had failed in the driveway.

Ethan had blamed the cold.

Nine days earlier, her prenatal vitamins had disappeared and been replaced with identical bottles.

Ethan had laughed when she complained.

Four days earlier, he had insisted she sign a medical proxy because labor could become complicated.

Grace had signed without reading every line.

She had trusted her husband.

The memory made her nauseated.

"The medical proxy."

Maya looked up.

"What about it?"

"I signed one four days ago."

Maya's expression sharpened.

"Did you keep a copy?"

"Ethan did."

Luka swore under his breath.

Grace stared at him.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"You definitely said something."

"I said your husband is efficient."

Maya gave Luka a look.

"That is not what you said."

For the first time, Grace laughed.

It came out unexpectedly.

It also hurt.

She pressed a hand to her abdomen.

Luka took one step forward.

Grace raised a finger.

"Don't."

He stopped.

"I'm fine."

"You are six hours postpartum."

"And apparently in the middle of a corporate conspiracy."

"Both things can be true."

Maya's phone buzzed.

She read a message.

"We have the corridor footage."

Grace's laughter vanished.

The hospital's first response had been that the camera outside Room 614 was undergoing maintenance.

Luka's security contract with the building gave his company access to a mirrored backup system.

A laptop appeared on the tray table.

The footage began at 5:42 a.m.

Grace watched herself being wheeled down the corridor in labor.

Ethan followed.

He was holding her hand.

He looked frightened.

He looked like the husband she thought she knew.

At 5:55, he stepped away to make a phone call.

Vanessa appeared from a service elevator two minutes later.

Grace's skin prickled.

Vanessa was already inside the hospital.

She and Ethan spoke for less than thirty seconds.

Then Ethan returned to Grace.

Vanessa walked the opposite direction.

At 6:08, she entered an administrative records office.

At 6:12, the custody petition was filed.

At 6:37, Ethan left Grace's delivery room while nurses prepared for the final stage of birth.

At 6:41, Sophie was born.

At 6:48, Vanessa reappeared.

This time she was with Linda Price.

The two women entered a staff-only medication room.

At 6:51, the false psychosis diagnosis appeared in Grace's chart.

At 7:02, Ethan stood beside Vanessa near the elevator.

He did not look like a new father.

He looked like a man waiting for a train.

Grace watched herself appear at the far end of the corridor holding Sophie.

She saw the moment Ethan told her to call when she could think clearly.

She saw Luka arrive.

Then Maya paused the footage.

"Go back."

Grace pointed at the records office.

Maya rewound.

Vanessa entered at 6:08.

A man opened the door from inside.

He wore a hospital administrator's badge.

Luka leaned toward the screen.

"I know him."

Maya looked at him.

"Who?"

"Peter Lang."

Grace recognized the name.

Peter Lang was the hospital's chief financial officer.

He was also a member of Bellamy Medical Holdings' audit committee.

Grace's grandfather had praised him for years.

The footage continued.

At 6:10, Lang handed Vanessa a folder.

At 6:11, Vanessa photographed several pages with her phone.

Then she returned the folder.

Maya froze the frame.

The label on the folder was visible.

BENNETT FAMILY TRUST - SUCCESSOR EVENT.

Grace stared at it.

"What is a successor event?"

Nobody answered.

Grace looked from Maya to Luka.

"You both know."

Luka's silence confirmed it.

"Tell me."

He looked at Sophie.

Then he looked back at Grace.

"Your daughter's birth triggered a transfer of control in Bellamy Medical Holdings."

Grace felt the blood leave her face.

"Control to who?"

Luka's answer came quietly.

"To her."

Grace asked Maya to replay the footage from the beginning.

Maya did.

The second viewing was worse because Grace knew where to look.

She watched Ethan glance at his watch while she was being wheeled into labor and delivery.

She watched him text with one hand while rubbing Grace's back with the other.

She watched Vanessa step from the service elevator already wearing the red dress.

Grace paused the screen.

"She came dressed for whatever happened after."

Maya looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

"That dress is not something she wore to work."

Grace zoomed in.

Vanessa carried a small black garment bag over one arm.

"She had clothes with her."

"She planned to be here for hours."

Luka leaned closer to the screen.

"Good catch."

Grace disliked how much the praise meant to her.

They advanced the video.

At 6:03, Ethan walked to a vending alcove and removed a folded paper from inside his jacket.

He photographed it with his phone.

Then he tore it into four pieces and dropped them into a trash can.

Luka immediately called one of his investigators.

"Preserve the trash from level six if it has not been compacted."

Grace stared at him.

"You think it is still there?"

"Hospitals are slow at the exact things you need them to be slow at."

Twenty minutes later, a clear evidence bag arrived.

Four paper fragments had been recovered beneath coffee cups and a plastic salad container.

Maya wore gloves and aligned the pieces on the tray.

The reconstructed document contained only half a page.

It was enough.

The top line read TEMPORARY VOTING AUTHORITY.

The second visible line referred to legal incapacity within thirty days of a successor event.

Grace felt her heartbeat change.

"He had the trust language with him while I was in labor."

Maya nodded.

"Yes."

"He wasn't just prepared."

"He was rehearsing."

Luka said nothing.

Grace looked at him.

"What?"

"The filing at 6:12 now makes sense."

"He needed the petition timestamp to exist before the trust transferred at birth."

Maya understood.

"So he could argue the alleged instability predated the successor event."

Grace swallowed.

Her daughter had not even taken her first breath before Ethan started positioning himself to control her inheritance.

The thought made Grace's anger cleaner.

Less emotional.

More useful.

"I want copies of everything."

Maya nodded.

"You will have them."

"Not summaries."

"Not explanations."

"Copies."

Luka looked at her.

"Done."

Grace met his eyes.

"And from now on, if your investigators find something about my life, I hear it when you hear it."

Luka hesitated.

"There may be things that are unverified."

"Then tell me they are unverified."

"There may be things that are painful."

"I have noticed."

Luka nodded once.

"Agreed."

It was the first condition Grace imposed on him.

It would not be the last.

The laptop chimed.

A new security clip loaded automatically.

It was live footage from the hospital parking garage.

Linda Price was getting into a black SUV.

Peter Lang was behind the wheel.

Vanessa was sitting in the passenger seat.
