Chapter 15 - VANESSA'S REAL NAME

Peter Lang disappeared before police could question him.
His home was empty.
His office had been wiped.
His passport had not been used.
His phone was found in a trash bin behind a suburban grocery store.
For the first time, federal investigators entered the case.
Bellamy Medical Holdings suspended three executives.
Grace used her voting authority to place every fertility-clinic archive under independent custody.
The board resisted.
Grace overruled them.
"I spent my whole life avoiding this company."
She told Maya after the meeting.
"Apparently that was my best qualification to run it."
Maya smiled.
"Low bar."
The night before Vanessa called, Grace received a package with no return address.
Moretti security screened it before bringing it upstairs.
Inside was a red dress.
Not Vanessa's dress from the hospital.
A cheaper imitation.
Pinned to it was a note.
YOU THINK YOU KNOW WHO THE WOMAN IN RED IS.
YOU DON'T.
Grace read it twice.
Luka examined the package.
"No prints."
Maya looked at the handwriting.
"Could be a threat."
"Could be bait."
Grace touched the fabric.
"Or someone wants me focused on Vanessa."
Luka looked at her.
"Exactly."
The package bothered Grace because it confirmed something she had started to suspect.
Vanessa was guilty.
That did not necessarily make her the architect.
The next morning, Bellamy's internal audit uncovered payments from a consulting company controlled by Charles Vale to Ethan, Peter Lang, and two clinic employees.
Vanessa's name did not appear.
Grace showed the report to Maya.
"Maybe she was paid another way."
"Maybe."
"Or maybe her father used her."
Maya raised an eyebrow.
"You are feeling sympathy for the woman who slept with your husband?"
"No."
Grace's answer was immediate.
"I am feeling suspicious of a pattern."
"Men keep putting women at the visible center of things they designed in private."
Maya smiled faintly.
"That is a useful suspicion."
Luka entered with another file.
"Vanessa requested a meeting."
Grace looked at the red dress lying across the conference table.
"Of course she did."
"She wants no attorneys."
Maya laughed.
"Then absolutely attorneys."
"She wants no security."
Luka's expression said enough.
Grace almost smiled.
"Then visible security."
"She wants privacy."
Grace looked at the glass conference room across the hall.
"She can have transparent privacy."
Maya nodded approvingly.
"I am stealing that phrase."
Before Vanessa arrived, Grace asked Luka one question.
"If Charles is behind this, why is he still free?"
"Because suspicion is not evidence."
"Peter disappeared."
"Helen is cooperating."
"Linda is in custody."
"None of them has given prosecutors a direct order from Charles."
Grace looked at the package again.
"Then we need him to talk."
Luka's eyes narrowed.
"Yes."
The first shape of the boardroom trap formed before Vanessa ever walked through the door.
Vanessa requested a private meeting the next morning.
Grace almost refused.
Luka wanted the meeting recorded.
Maya wanted two witnesses.
Vanessa wanted none of that.
Grace compromised by meeting in a glass conference room with cameras visible in every corner.
Vanessa arrived in white.
She no longer wore red.
Grace noticed the change.
"Trying a new costume?"
Vanessa sat across from her.
"You think clothes make me the villain."
"No."
Grace placed her phone on the table.
"Your behavior did most of the work."
Vanessa's mouth tightened.
"Ethan is going to turn on me."
"Good."
"He will turn on you first."
"He already did."
Vanessa looked toward the glass wall.
Luka stood outside.
"He scares people."
Grace followed her gaze.
"Only the ones who give him a reason."
"You sound like him."
"Get to the point."
Vanessa folded her hands.
"My legal name at birth was Vanessa Bellamy Vale."
Grace said nothing.
"My father removed Bellamy from our records after Arthur disowned him."
"I grew up hearing that your mother stole our family."
"My mother did not steal anything."
"That is not how my father told it."
Grace leaned back.
"So this is revenge?"
"No."
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
"It is correction."
"Arthur built Bellamy with my grandmother's money."
"Then he erased her son from the company because Charles questioned him."
"Your mother inherited everything."
"Then you were born."
"Then Sophie."
Vanessa's voice became bitter.
"Every generation, my father watched another door close."
Grace studied her.
"So you slept with my husband."
"Ethan came to me."
"That is not an answer."
"I did not force him."
"Still not an answer."
Vanessa looked away.
For the first time, shame appeared.
It vanished quickly.
"Ethan told me he married you because Arthur had shown him a draft of the trust."
Grace's chest tightened.
"When?"
"Before your engagement."
The words hurt more than Grace expected.
Ethan had proposed beneath the lights of Navy Pier.
He had cried.
Grace had believed every second.
Vanessa continued.
"He thought controlling your husband would be easier than fighting your grandfather."
"Then Arthur changed the trust."
"He gave voting control to you instead of the spouse."
"Ethan panicked."
Grace frowned.
"When did he learn about the thirty-day unfitness clause?"
"After Arthur died."
"Peter Lang showed him."
Grace's pulse quickened.
"And you?"
"My father showed me."
"Then you and Ethan made a plan."
Vanessa's silence confirmed it.
Grace's hands curled under the table.
"The fake texts?"
"Ethan."
"The forged psych diagnosis?"
Vanessa looked toward the cameras.
"Peter."
"The sedative?"
"Linda."
"The custody petition?"
"Me."
Grace stared at her.
Vanessa did not look away.
"I drafted it."
"I used language from another case."
"Ethan signed it."
Grace's anger became strangely cold.
"The nursery fire?"
Vanessa's face changed.
"Not me."
"Helen Marr?"
"I didn't know she was alive until the news broke."
"Peter Lang disappearing?"
"Not me."
"My father's crash?"
Vanessa stood suddenly.
"I was twenty-four when Samuel died."
"I did not kill your father."
Grace stood too.
"Did Charles?"
Vanessa's eyes filled with something that looked like fear.
"I don't know."
Grace believed her.
That was the worst part.
Vanessa picked up her bag.
"You think my father is the center of this."
"He isn't."
Grace stopped her.
"Then who is?"
Vanessa looked through the glass at Luka.
Then she looked back at Grace.
"Ask Luka who owned Bellamy Reproductive Center before Bellamy bought it."
Grace turned toward Luka.
His expression did not change.
Vanessa smiled faintly.
"He knows."
She opened the door.
"Because it belonged to Moretti Medical Investments."
Grace stared at Luka.
Vanessa walked away.
Luka entered the room.
Grace waited until the door closed.
May you like
"Tell me she is lying."
Luka did not.
