Chapter 18 - THE WRONG FATHER

Luka did not speak for several seconds.

Grace watched him absorb the sentence.

Peter looked frightened now that he had said it aloud.

Maya broke the silence.

"You are saying M-17 was Luka Moretti's archived fertility sample."

Peter nodded.

"That is what Charles told me."

Grace felt the hospital room disappear around her.

Every clue rushed together.

Luka had preserved a sample after his injuries.

Charles had controlled the clinic.

Samuel had ordered the sample destroyed.

Samuel had later discovered M-17 was still in the archive.

Ethan had arranged Grace's fertility treatment through the same system.

Helen said Ethan paid to falsify the donor record.

Grace looked at Luka.

"Did you know?"

His answer came immediately.

"No."

She believed him.

That frightened her more than if she had not.

Peter continued.

"Charles kept it because Moretti was becoming powerful."

"He said everyone powerful needed a leash."

Luka's voice was quiet.

"What did he plan to do with it?"

"I don't know at first."

"Later, when Ethan came asking about donor options, Charles saw an opportunity."

Grace felt sick.

"Ethan knew the donor was Luka?"

Peter shook his head.

"I don't think so."

"Charles told Ethan it was an anonymous donor with excellent health screening."

"Ethan wanted a child without admitting he was infertile."

"Charles wanted a biological fact he could weaponize later."

Maya understood before Grace did.

"If Grace ever challenged them, they could make it appear she had an affair with Luka."

Peter nodded.

"Or accuse Luka of using his influence to interfere with Bellamy."

"Or threaten to expose the clinic theft and drag both families into scandal."

Grace stared at Sophie.

Her daughter had been treated like a future piece of evidence before she even existed.

Rage replaced shock.

"Test Luka."

Luka looked at her.

"Grace."

"No more waiting."

"No more codes."

"No more dead men's warnings."

"Test him."

Grace did not tell the press about the possible M-17 identity.

For the first time, withholding information did not feel like surrender.

It felt like choosing who was entitled to a private fact before it became public property.

She and Luka sat in the clinic waiting room without speaking.

The testing facility was independent of Bellamy and chosen by the court.

A technician called Luka first.

He stood.

Grace surprised herself by catching his sleeve.

He looked down.

"What?"

"I don't know."

She released him.

"Just don't let them call you M-17."

Luka's expression softened.

"I have survived worse nicknames."

The technician swabbed his cheek and sealed the sample in front of both attorneys.

Then Grace signed the chain-of-custody form.

Her name appeared beside his.

The sight felt strangely intimate.

Not romantic.

Not yet.

Simply consequential.

Outside, reporters waited behind barriers.

Luka offered to take the rear exit.

Grace shook her head.

"No more sneaking through service doors."

They walked out together.

Questions came immediately.

"Mr. Moretti, are you the father?"

"Grace, did you have an affair?"

"Did Bellamy steal donor material?"

Grace stopped at the top of the steps.

Luka stopped beside her.

She looked at the cameras.

"A court-certified test is being conducted because historical clinic records may have been manipulated."

"When we have verified facts, we will address them."

A reporter shouted.

"Why should anyone believe you after so many changing stories?"

Grace turned toward him.

"Because the story changes when hidden facts are uncovered."

"That is what investigation looks like."

"Pretending the first rumor must remain true forever is not consistency."

"It is laziness."

The reporter lowered his microphone.

Luka looked at Grace as they walked toward the vehicle.

"You enjoyed that."

"A little."

"I am concerned."

"You should be."

For ten seconds, they were simply two exhausted people laughing beside a courthouse vehicle.

Then Luka's phone rang.

Victor Sloane had been found in Arizona.

The case moved again.

The DNA question remained sealed for forty-eight more hours.

Maya arranged a court-certified test that afternoon.

The result would take two days.

Those forty-eight hours became the longest of Grace's life.

Ethan was arrested on charges related to evidence tampering, fraud, and conspiracy.

He posted bond within hours.

He called Grace from a number she did not recognize.

She almost did not answer.

Then she did.

"What do you want?"

Ethan's voice sounded different.

The confidence was gone.

"I need to explain."

"You had three years."

"I did not know Charles used Moretti's sample."

Grace went still.

"So Peter told you."

"My lawyer did."

"I thought it was an anonymous donor."

"You let me believe the fertility problem was mine."

Silence.

"You watched me blame myself."

"I was ashamed."

Grace laughed softly.

"You were ashamed, so you made me ashamed instead."

"Grace."

"Did you marry me for Bellamy?"

Ethan did not answer.

That was answer enough.

Grace closed her eyes.

"Did you ever love me?"

A long silence followed.

"In my way."

Grace felt something inside her finally detach.

"Your way is the reason Sophie will never know you as her father."

Ethan's voice sharpened.

"I am still her legal father until a court says otherwise."

"Then enjoy the technicality while it lasts."

"You think Luka will stay when he learns the truth?"

Grace looked through the apartment window.

Luka stood on the balcony with a security officer.

He was giving Grace privacy even now.

"I don't know what Luka will do."

"That is the difference between us."

"I am not building my life around controlling someone's next move anymore."

Ethan became angry.

"You think he is noble?"

"Ask him how his company made its first ten million."

Grace almost smiled.

"I already learned that asking hard questions is useful."

"I am not afraid of his answers."

"You should be."

"Goodbye, Ethan."

She ended the call.

The next morning, federal agents arrested Victor Sloane.

He had been living under another name in Arizona.

He agreed to cooperate after hearing Peter Lang was alive.

Charles Vale was denied bail.

Vanessa negotiated a cooperation agreement.

The conspiracy was collapsing.

Grace should have felt safe.

Instead, all she could think about was the sealed DNA result arriving the next day.

That evening, Luka knocked on her bedroom door.

"Come in."

He stood near the doorway.

"If the test says I am Sophie's biological father, I will not use it against you."

Grace looked at him.

"Why would you say that?"

"Because every man around you has used a document to take something."

"A deed."

"A proxy."

"A custody petition."

"A trust clause."

"A lab record."

He took a breath.

"I need you to know I will not become another paper you have to fear."

Grace's eyes burned.

"And if the test says you are not?"

Luka looked at Sophie sleeping nearby.

"Then I still meant what I said in the hospital."

"I do not leave children unprotected."

Grace stood.

For once, she crossed the distance between them.

She took his scarred hand.

Luka looked down at their hands as if the gesture frightened him more than any threat had.

Grace squeezed once.

"Whatever that envelope says tomorrow, don't disappear before I read it."

"I won't."

The next morning, Maya arrived holding the sealed result.

Before she could open it, every phone in the apartment buzzed at once.

A news alert filled the screen.

ETHAN COLE CLAIMS HE IS THE VICTIM OF A MORETTI-BENNETT PATERNITY FRAUD.

May you like

Grace looked at Luka.

Ethan had made his final move.
