Chapter 17 - THE LAST WITNESS

Peter Lang had not disappeared to escape arrest.
He had disappeared because Charles Vale had ordered him killed.
The envelope contained a storage-unit key, a handwritten address, and a note Vanessa had received three days earlier.
IF CHARLES SACRIFICES ME, GO TO UNIT 42.
Federal agents reached the storage facility before dawn.
They found blood on the concrete floor.
They found burned financial records.
They found Peter Lang alive behind a false plywood wall.
He had a gunshot wound in his shoulder and a fractured wrist.
Grace learned the news while feeding Sophie in the secure apartment Luka had moved them to after the fire.
"Can he talk?"
Maya nodded.
"He already asked for a lawyer."
Grace felt disappointment.
"Of course he did."
"He also asked for you."
Grace looked up.
Luka shook his head immediately.
"No."
Grace stared at him.
"We have been over this."
"He is in federal custody."
"Which makes it safer."
"It also means he is a wounded conspirator with reasons to manipulate you."
Grace lifted Sophie to her shoulder.
"Then I will bring a lawyer."
Maya smiled.
Luka looked betrayed.
"You two are becoming a problem."
"We prefer team."
Peter was hospitalized under guard.
He looked twenty years older than the man in the hospital corridor footage.
His left arm was strapped to his chest.
A bruise darkened one eye.
Grace sat across from him with Maya beside her.
Luka remained outside the glass door.
Peter stared at Grace for a long time.
"You look like Samuel."
Grace's anger rose immediately.
"Do not use my father to make yourself feel better."
Peter winced.
"Fair."
"Why were you in his car?"
Peter closed his eyes.
"Because I was trying to help him."
Grace laughed in disbelief.
"You forged my psychiatric chart."
"Five years changes a person."
"Apparently not enough."
Peter looked at Maya.
"Do I have immunity?"
"No."
"Then why would I talk?"
Grace leaned forward.
"Because Charles already tried to kill you."
"And because the man whose daughter you helped destroy is sitting in front of you with a newborn you almost helped take away."
Peter looked at Sophie.
His face folded with shame.
"Samuel found the M-series archive."
Grace said nothing.
"He discovered Charles had kept supposedly destroyed donor samples and reassigned them under new codes."
"He also found payments from wealthy families and lawyers."
"Some paid Charles to prove paternity."
"Others paid him to create uncertainty."
Maya asked.
"Why were you involved?"
"I was a young finance director."
"I found the money first."
"Charles told me it was confidential settlements."
"I believed him because believing him made me rich."
Peter laughed bitterly.
"That is the part people leave out when they explain how corruption starts."
"Usually you do not wake up evil."
"You just accept one profitable explanation after another."
Grace had no sympathy.
"The crash."
Peter nodded.
"Samuel asked me to meet him."
"He said he was going to the FBI."
"I begged him to wait because my name was in the ledgers."
"I got into his car at the toll plaza."
"We argued."
"Then I saw a black Mercedes behind us."
Grace's heart pounded.
"Charles?"
"No."
"His driver."
"A man named Victor Sloane."
Luka, listening through the glass, immediately spoke into his phone.
Peter continued.
"Sloane hit us once from behind."
"Samuel accelerated."
"Sloane hit us again."
"The car spun."
"I remember the guardrail."
Peter's breathing became shallow.
"I climbed out before the car settled."
"My arm was cut."
"Samuel was trapped."
"I ran because I knew Charles would kill me too."
Grace's voice shook with rage.
"You left him."
"Yes."
"Luka arrived eleven minutes later."
Peter looked toward the glass.
"I saw his headlights from the trees."
"I was still there."
Luka's face changed.
Grace stared at Peter.
"Why didn't you come back?"
"Because I was a coward."
The word hung in the room.
It was the same word Luka had used for Ethan in the hospital corridor.
Grace looked down at Sophie.
"Did Charles order the crash?"
Peter nodded.
"Yes."
"Can you prove it?"
"I recorded him afterward."
Grace looked up.
Peter smiled weakly.
"Samuel taught me one useful thing before I betrayed him."
"Keep copies."
Peter asked for water before continuing.
Grace waited while a nurse adjusted his IV.
When the door closed again, Peter looked at Luka through the glass.
"He came for Samuel."
Grace frowned.
"Luka?"
"Yes."
"Not for evidence."
"Not for the company."
"For Samuel."
Grace looked toward Luka.
Peter continued.
"When I was hiding in the trees, I heard Moretti calling your father's name."
"He climbed halfway down the embankment in dress shoes."
"He cut his hands on the guardrail."
Grace remembered the scar across Luka's wrist.
"He stayed until the ambulance left."
Peter's voice became quieter.
"Then he stood alone on the shoulder for almost an hour."
Grace felt her anger toward Luka change shape.
He had lied by omission.
He had also carried the worst part of her father's last hour alone for five years.
Both things could be true.
Peter looked ashamed.
"I watched him from the woods and still did not come out."
"Why tell me this?"
"Because I spent five years telling myself I survived because I was smart."
"I survived because other people were braver than I was."
Grace had no comforting answer for him.
Peter did not deserve one from her.
Maya shifted the conversation.
"You said Charles discussed M-17 after the crash."
Peter nodded.
"Two days later."
"He was furious Samuel had made copies."
"He said M-17 was his insurance policy."
"Against whom?"
"Moretti."
"Bellamy."
"Anyone who threatened him."
Grace felt the pieces tightening.
"Why was Luka so important to him then?"
Peter looked through the glass.
"Moretti Protective Group had just won a hospital security contract Charles wanted for one of his shell companies."
"Luka was also buying medical-service debt."
"Charles thought he might uncover the clinic accounts."
Luka had become a threat without knowing the weapon stored against him.
Grace thought about how many lives Charles had reduced to leverage.
"Where is the recording?"
Peter closed his eyes.
"Unit forty-two."
"Inside the false bottom of a red tool chest."
"The code is Samuel's birthday."
Grace stared at him.
"You used my father's birthday?"
"So I would not forget why I made the copy."
The answer angered her.
It also made sense.
People were rarely one thing.
That had become the most exhausting lesson of her life.
The storage unit contained the recording.
Charles's voice was unmistakable.
He told Peter the crash had been necessary.
He told him Samuel had become a threat.
He told him the M-17 file was worth more than the entire clinic because it could destroy both a Bellamy heir and Luka Moretti if used correctly.
Grace replayed that sentence three times.
"Destroy Luka?"
Maya looked toward him.
Luka's face had gone still.
Peter swallowed.
"Charles knew who M-17 was."
Grace's pulse became thunder in her ears.
"Who?"
May you like
Peter looked at Luka.
"Him."
