Chapter 1 - The Floor Beneath the Chandeliers.

.The scream that stopped the Harrington mansion did not come from Victoria.

It came from two-year-old Noah.

His small body shook against the chest of the young maid kneeling on the polished hallway floor.

Emma Hayes had one arm wrapped around the crying toddler and the other raised defensively between him and the woman standing over them.

Victoria Sloan looked flawless even when she was furious.

Her dark blonde hair was pulled into a severe bun.

Her double-breasted blue pantsuit was tailored so sharply that every line seemed designed to intimidate.

Her heels clicked against the black marble as she stepped closer.

"Don't you dare touch him with your peasant hands."

Emma tightened her hold on Noah.

The child buried his wet face against the white apron covering her black uniform.

Victoria pointed at her.

"I am the future lady of this house."

Emma looked up through tears.

She had been crying before Noah started.

A red mark crossed her wrist where Victoria had grabbed her.

"He's a motherless child."

Her voice broke.

"If you want to hit someone, hit me."

Victoria's mouth curled.

"You think protecting him makes you important?"

Emma stared back.

"No."

"It makes me responsible."

At the far end of the hallway, Daniel Harrington stopped beneath the final crystal chandelier.

He had entered through the west study and heard everything.

His gray suit jacket remained buttoned.

His black tie was perfectly straight.

Only his eyes betrayed what was happening inside him.

Victoria had not seen him.

Emma had.

For one second, their eyes met.

Emma did not call out.

She only pulled Noah closer.

Victoria raised her hand.

Daniel moved.

His shoes struck the floor once.

Victoria spun.

The change in her face was immediate.

Arrogance vanished.

Fear appeared.

Then the fear softened into wounded innocence.

It happened so quickly that Daniel almost admired the skill.

"Darling, thank God."

She pointed at Emma.

"This crazy maid just pushed your son."

Noah cried harder.

Emma stared at Victoria in disbelief.

Daniel continued walking.

Victoria rushed toward him.

"I came around the corner and she had him on the floor."

"She was screaming at him."

"I tried to protect Noah."

Daniel stopped less than three feet from her.

Victoria reached for his arm.

He did not move.

"I was standing right behind you, Victoria."

Her hand froze.

The hallway became silent except for Noah's sobbing.

Victoria blinked.

"What?"

Daniel's voice did not rise.

"I heard every word."

Her face emptied.

Emma lowered her head.

Noah looked toward his father.

"Dada."

The sound broke something in Daniel.

He stepped around Victoria and crouched in front of Emma.

"Is he hurt?"

Emma shook her head.

"Not physically."

Victoria found her voice.

"Daniel, she is manipulating you."

He looked over his shoulder.

"Stop."

"She hates me."

"Stop."

"She has been trying to turn Noah against me for months."

Daniel stood.

Victoria lifted her chin.

"You are really going to believe a maid over the woman you're marrying?"

Daniel's expression hardened.

"The wedding is canceled."

Victoria laughed once.

It sounded like disbelief trying to survive.

"You don't mean that."

"The prenup is shredded."

Her smile disappeared.

Daniel looked toward the camera dome above the hallway arch.

"Security."

Victoria stepped back.

"You cannot do this to me."

Daniel stared at her.

"I just did."

Two security officers appeared from the side corridor.

Victoria looked from them to Daniel.

Then to Emma.

The panic in her face sharpened into something colder.

"You think you won?"

Emma did not answer.

Daniel held out his hand.

"Your house key."

Victoria reached into her jacket pocket.

For one second, Daniel saw the edge of a second smartphone beside the key.

Black.

No case.

Victoria saw his eyes move.

Her hand closed over the pocket.

"What is that?"

"Nothing."

"Give it to me."

"No."

Daniel took one step forward.

Victoria backed away.

"It's private."

"You just accused an employee of abusing my son."

"Nothing about tonight is private anymore."

The security officers shifted closer.

Victoria looked trapped.

Then she smiled.

It was a different smile from the one she had used moments earlier.

This one belonged to someone who had decided to stop pretending.

"Fine."

She pulled out the phone.

Before handing it over, she pressed one button.

The screen flashed.

REMOTE ERASE INITIATED.

Daniel grabbed the device.

"What did you just do?"

Victoria's face went pale.

A security officer took the phone.

The erase wheel stopped at nine percent when he cut the wireless signal.

Daniel looked at Victoria.

"What is on this phone?"

She said nothing.

Noah started crying again.

Emma rocked him slowly.

Daniel looked down at his son.

Then back at the woman he had nearly married.

Victoria whispered, "You have no idea what she has been hiding from you."

Emma's body went still.

Daniel noticed.

"What is she talking about?"

Emma looked at Victoria.

Victoria smiled again.

"Ask your maid why your dead wife's name is on my phone."

The hallway seemed to tilt.

Daniel stared at her.

His late wife, Rachel, had been dead for three years.

No one spoke her name casually in this house.

"What did you say?"

Victoria looked at the black phone in the security officer's hand.

May you like

Then she said the sentence that turned a canceled wedding into something much darker.

"Rachel knew Emma before you ever hired her."
