Chapter 9 - Rachel's Last Night.

.Celeste Sloan had never been Rachel's nurse.
She had no medical license.
The signature on the medication chart should have been impossible.
Lena called the hospice agency.
The original records were archived.
The official chart did not contain Celeste's name.
It listed a licensed nurse named Celia Stone.
Same initials.
C.S.
The scanned record sent to Lily could have been altered.
Again, appearance threatened to outrun fact.
Daniel refused to repeat the mistake.
"Verify everything."
The hospice agency located Celia Stone.
She was retired in Arizona.
Celia remembered Rachel.
She remembered the final night.
She remembered one visitor creating problems.
Celeste Sloan.
Celia said Celeste arrived claiming to represent Rachel's foundation.
Rachel refused to see her.
Celeste remained in the kitchen for nearly an hour.
Celia never saw her enter the bedroom.
The medication discrepancy remained unexplained.
Celia's handwritten notes showed the correct dosage.
A later electronic entry showed a larger one.
Who changed it?
The hospice computer logs were old but recoverable.
The change came from a remote administrative account.
The account belonged to Harrington Family Office.
Arthur Crane.
Daniel closed his eyes.
The evidence did not prove murder.
It proved tampering with a record.
That distinction mattered.
Rachel was terminally ill.
Her death had been expected within days.
No one could responsibly claim more without medical review.
Lena requested the county medical examiner examine the records.
No dramatic conclusions were offered.
Daniel appreciated the restraint.
Truth did not need theatrical certainty.
Lily stayed at the mansion.
She refused the guest suite.
She chose the small room beside Emma's.
"I don't know you people."
Daniel nodded.
"Fair."
Noah met her after lunch.
He stared at her for several seconds.
Lily crouched.
"Hi."
Noah hid behind Emma.
Lily smiled sadly.
"I do that too."
Noah peeked out.
She held up a small stuffed fox.
"Michael said your mom liked foxes."
Noah took it.
Then he touched Lily's hair.
"Mommy?"
Lily's eyes filled.
"No."
She swallowed.
"She was my mommy too."
Noah looked confused.
Emma sat between them.
"That makes Lily your sister."
Noah considered the word.
"Sister."
Lily began crying.
Noah handed her the fox.
The adults turned away to give them privacy.
Daniel stood in the hallway.
He had never felt more excluded from his own family.
And he deserved part of that exclusion.
Rachel had hidden Lily because shame and fear shaped her choices.
Daniel had hidden grief behind work.
Victoria entered the empty space created by both.
That afternoon, federal agents searched Arthur Crane's office.
They found shredded trust drafts.
Offshore account records.
And a sealed envelope labeled VICTORIA - POST WEDDING.
Inside were instructions.
Phase One: marriage.
Phase Two: amend household authority.
Phase Three: establish Daniel volatility.
Phase Four: isolate Noah.
Phase Five: remove Hayes.
Phase Six: trigger incapacity.
Phase Seven: execute asset transfer.
Emma read the list.
"Remove Hayes."
Daniel looked at her.
"You were a line item."
"So was your marriage."
Lily stood by the window.
"So was my inheritance."
Everyone had been converted into a step.
Arthur was arrested at 4:20.
He immediately requested a lawyer.
At 6:05, Preston Hale was detained in Lisbon before connecting to Morocco.
Celeste remained missing.
Victoria remained under investigation but not yet arrested.
Her lawyers argued she was manipulated by Celeste and Arthur.
Then Daniel received a voicemail from Victoria.
She was crying.
Real crying this time.
"Daniel, please."
"I need to talk to you."
"My mother lied to me."
"I didn't know about Rachel's medication."
"I didn't know Arthur stole from Lily."
"I only wanted what Charles promised us."
Charles?
Daniel listened again.
Victoria said Charles.
Not Daniel's father.
His grandfather.
Charles Harrington founded the company.
He died before Victoria was born.
Why would he promise her anything?
Michael knew.
He heard the voicemail.
His face changed.
"Celeste's mother worked for Charles."
"So?"
"Rachel once suspected Celeste believed the Harringtons owed her family."
"Why?"
Michael looked toward Lily.
"Because Celeste claimed Charles was her father."
Daniel laughed from disbelief.
"That would make Celeste my aunt."
"And Victoria my cousin."
Michael nodded.
"If it's true."
The family tree had become another potential weapon.
Daniel ordered no assumptions.
Lena found an old sealed paternity lawsuit filed by Celeste's mother in 1978.
It had been dismissed after a private settlement.
The settlement agreement was missing.
A ledger showed yearly payments from Charles Harrington to Celeste's mother until Charles died.
The claim might have been true.
Or the payments might have been hush money for something else.
Victoria had grown up believing Harrington wealth had been stolen from her bloodline.
That belief explained resentment.
It did not excuse crime.
At 8:40, the mansion gate alarm sounded.
A black SUV approached.
It stopped outside.
Celeste stepped out alone.
She wore a dark coat.
She raised both hands.
Police moved toward her.
Celeste called across the gate.
"I am surrendering."
Daniel watched from the window.
Then Celeste added one condition.
"I will tell you who changed Rachel's medication record."
Daniel went still.
Police placed her in custody.
She looked up toward the mansion.
Her eyes found Daniel through the glass.
Then she shouted loudly enough for him to hear.
"It wasn't Arthur."
Daniel stared.
May you like
Celeste smiled faintly.
"It was Victoria."
