Chapter 7 - The Custody Order.

.Daniel reached the mansion fourteen minutes after the call ended.
It felt like fourteen years.
Three county vehicles blocked the circular drive.
A television crew had already gathered outside the gates.
Victoria had tipped them off.
Of course she had.
Daniel ran through the front doors.
The hallway where he canceled the wedding now looked like a courtroom without a judge.
Two deputies stood near the staircase.
Emma was seated on the floor again.
Noah clung to her.
Victoria stood ten feet away holding a court order.
She had changed into a cream dress.
Her hair was loose.
She looked less like a fiancée and more like someone auditioning for motherhood.
"Daniel."
He ignored her.
He looked at the lead deputy.
"I need to see the order."
The deputy handed him a copy.
Judge Malcolm Reeve had signed it at 8:42.
The order cited Daniel's alleged mental instability.
It cited his assault on Victoria.
It cited the poisoning of Noah while in household care.
It described Emma as a "non-relative domestic employee under active criminal investigation."
That last statement was false.
Emma was not under criminal investigation.
She had been cleared.
Lena arrived seconds later.
She read the order once.
Then again.
"This affidavit is fraudulent."
Victoria smiled faintly.
"Tell the judge."
Lena pointed to a paragraph.
"The affiant claims Detective Ortiz confirmed Emma remains a suspect."
"I am Detective Ortiz."
Everyone turned.
Lena stood beneath the chandelier.
"I never said that."
The deputies exchanged looks.
Victoria's expression tightened.
The lead deputy called his supervisor.
Victoria moved closer to Noah.
"Sweetheart."
Noah buried his face against Emma.
"Come with me."
"No."
Victoria forced a smile.
"Your daddy is sick."
Daniel nearly stepped forward.
Lena put one hand across his chest.
Not because he would attack.
Because Victoria wanted him to move.
He understood.
Daniel stayed where he was.
Noah looked at Victoria.
"Daddy not sick."
Victoria's smile sharpened.
"You don't understand."
Emma whispered to Noah.
"You do not have to answer."
Victoria snapped.
"Stop coaching him."
Emma looked up.
"I am keeping him calm."
"You are stealing my family."
Emma's expression changed.
"No."
"You tried to steal his trust."
Victoria went still.
The deputies heard.
So did the cameras outside through the open front doors.
Victoria looked at Daniel.
"You told her."
Daniel said nothing.
The supervisor called back.
The deputies were instructed to pause enforcement pending verification of the affidavit.
Victoria's face finally cracked.
"You can't just ignore a judge."
Lena answered.
"No one is ignoring the judge."
"We are informing him someone lied to him."
The order had been filed electronically by Preston Hale.
His office submitted the affidavit.
His digital signature appeared valid.
Preston did not answer calls.
Police went to his office.
Empty.
His apartment was empty too.
His passport had been used at Newark Airport that morning.
Flight to Lisbon.
The scheme was unraveling fast enough that the people behind it were beginning to run.
Victoria knew it.
Daniel saw the fear.
She lowered the order.
Then she looked at Noah.
Something desperate entered her eyes.
"I loved you."
Noah did not respond.
Victoria looked at Daniel.
"I loved him."
Daniel finally spoke.
"You drugged him."
"My mother did."
"You planned to use the result."
"That is not the same."
Emma stared at her.
"It is worse."
Victoria turned.
"You shut your mouth."
Emma stood slowly, still carrying Noah.
For the first time, she looked taller than Victoria.
"You were willing to let a child be sick so a judge would think his father failed."
"You were willing to let him cry so cameras would make you look maternal."
"You were willing to send me to jail because Rachel trusted me."
Victoria's eyes widened at Rachel's name.
Emma continued.
"She was right about you."
Victoria lunged.
Not at Emma.
At the folder Lena held.
She grabbed the edge.
Papers scattered across the marble.
One page slid beneath the console.
Daniel saw Victoria's hand move toward it.
The page was the transaction map linking Vale Meridian Partners to the trust scheme.
Daniel stepped on the paper before she could reach it.
Victoria looked up.
For one second, hatred replaced every performance.
Then the lead deputy took her arm.
"Ms. Sloan, step back."
She jerked free.
"You cannot touch me."
The deputy did not raise his voice.
"I can if you interfere with an investigation."
Victoria stopped.
The television crew outside captured the entire moment.
Lena collected the papers.
Then her phone rang.
Judge Reeve.
She answered on speaker at Daniel's request.
The judge sounded furious.
His emergency order was suspended.
He had never been told the affidavit relied on statements from Detective Ortiz.
He ordered Preston Hale to appear.
Lena told him Preston had fled.
Silence.
Then the judge said, "Mr. Harrington, no child leaves that residence today."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Noah remained in Emma's arms.
The immediate danger passed.
But the battle did not.
At 11:26, child protective services arrived.
They had received three anonymous reports.
One accused Daniel of domestic violence.
One accused Emma of inappropriate attachment.
One accused the household of medical neglect.
All three reports had been filed before Noah was poisoned.
Daniel stared at the dates.
Victoria's custody plan began weeks ago.
A CPS investigator requested to speak with Noah privately.
Daniel agreed.
Emma agreed.
Victoria demanded to attend.
The investigator refused.
Noah was taken into the playroom.
Twenty minutes later, the investigator emerged.
Her face was grave.
Daniel stood.
"What did he say?"
She looked at Victoria.
Then at Daniel.
"He said someone told him his mother died because his father did not protect her."
Daniel stopped breathing.
Victoria whispered, "Children say strange things."
The investigator continued.
"He also said the same person showed him photographs of his mother in the hospital."
Emma went pale.
Noah had never seen those photographs.
Daniel had locked them away.
Only one person had recently asked about Rachel's hospital archive.
Victoria.
The investigator asked Noah who showed him the pictures.
Noah's answer was one word.
"Grandma."
Celeste.
Then he said something else.
"Grandma said Mommy left me a sister."
Daniel felt the air disappear.
He looked at Emma.
She looked equally shocked.
Rachel had one child.
Noah.
As far as Daniel knew.
But Celeste had apparently told his son otherwise.
The investigator asked where the sister was.
May you like
Noah pointed toward the old east wing.
"Behind the yellow door."
