Chapter 2 - The Second Phone.

.The black phone sat inside a signal-blocking evidence pouch on Daniel's study desk.
Victoria remained in the mansion only because the police had not yet arrived.
Security kept her in the library.
Emma stayed upstairs with Noah.
Daniel stood alone in the study staring at the device.
His late wife's name echoed in his head.
Rachel knew Emma before you hired her.
That should have been impossible.
Emma joined the household eighteen months after Rachel died.
At least that was what Daniel believed.
He had hired her through a private domestic agency after three other nannies left within a year.
Emma had been quiet.
Competent.
Patient with Noah.
She knew exactly how to calm him during the night terrors that began after Victoria moved into the mansion.
Daniel had thought it was instinct.
Now he wondered what else it was.
The police arrived at 9:18.
Detective Lena Ortiz took statements separately.
Daniel told her everything.
He did not soften Victoria's behavior.
He did not exaggerate it either.
Emma described the confrontation in a trembling voice.
Victoria denied the insults.
Then Lena showed her the hallway audio.
The mansion cameras did not record full video in private residential areas.
They did record sound near exterior access points.
The west arch microphone had captured enough.
Victoria's face changed when her own words played back.
"Don't you dare touch him with your peasant hands."
The recording continued.
"If you want to hit someone, hit me."
Then Victoria's false accusation.
"This crazy maid just pushed your son."
Lena stopped the file.
Victoria stared at the table.
Her attorney had not yet arrived.
She requested one.
The interview ended.
Daniel asked about the black phone.
Lena said investigators could preserve it, but a warrant might be needed for full access.
Daniel handed over written consent for anything tied to his property, employees, or child's safety.
The phone's owner remained disputed.
Victoria claimed it belonged to a consulting company.
The serial number told another story.
It had been purchased under a shell corporation.
Harrington Family Strategies LLC.
Daniel had never heard of it.
The company had been registered eight months earlier.
Its listed manager was a lawyer named Preston Hale.
Daniel knew Hale.
He was Victoria's estate attorney.
He had drafted their prenuptial agreement.
At 10:02, Lena received confirmation that the remote erase had failed.
Most data remained intact.
The phone was encrypted.
A preview cache still showed several file names.
RACHEL_AUDIO.
NOAH_MED.
EMMA_ORIGINAL.
PRENUP_FINAL_B.
Daniel read the list twice.
"What is FINAL_B?"
Lena looked at him.
"You tell me."
Daniel went to his safe.
His signed prenup was there.
The agreement gave Victoria nothing from the Harrington family trust.
She would receive a fixed settlement if the marriage ended after five years.
She would never control Noah's inheritance.
That had been Daniel's nonnegotiable condition.
Lena examined the signature pages.
Then she asked for the electronic draft.
Daniel opened the version emailed by Preston Hale.
The file checksum did not match the printed agreement.
A second version had been created after Daniel signed.
The new document included a clause he had never approved.
If Daniel became incapacitated within five years of marriage, Victoria would serve as temporary trustee for Noah until a court appointed a permanent guardian.
Temporary trustee.
The phrase looked harmless.
It was not.
Noah's trust held forty-one percent of Harrington Medical Systems.
The company was worth billions.
Daniel felt cold.
"Could she enforce this?"
Lena shook her head.
"Not if you never signed it."
"Could someone make it look like I did?"
Lena looked at the black phone.
"That may be the point."
Upstairs, Noah began screaming.
Daniel ran.
Emma was carrying him out of the nursery.
His face was flushed.
His breathing came fast.
"What happened?"
Emma held up a juice cup.
"He drank from this."
Daniel smelled it.
Apple juice.
Nothing obvious.
Emma looked terrified.
"He was fine ten minutes ago."
Noah clutched her collar.
"Dada."
Daniel touched his son's forehead.
Too warm.
A paramedic unit still outside came upstairs.
They checked Noah.
His pulse was elevated.
He was conscious.
Then he vomited.
Daniel nearly lost control.
Emma kept talking calmly to the boy.
"Look at me, sweetheart."
"Stay with me."
The paramedic asked what Noah had eaten.
Emma listed dinner.
Milk.
Apple slices.
Half a roll.
No allergies.
No medication.
Victoria appeared at the far end of the hallway with a security officer behind her.
She looked at the cup.
Then at Emma.
"She gave it to him."
Daniel turned.
Emma stared at Victoria.
"No."
Victoria pointed.
"She made his juice."
Emma's face crumpled.
"I poured it from the kitchen pitcher."
Victoria looked at Daniel.
"This is what I was trying to tell you."
Daniel said nothing.
The old version of him might have reacted.
The version standing there had already learned what a polished accusation could hide.
He looked at the cup.
Then at the nursery door.
"Who was in this hallway while Emma was downstairs?"
The security officer checked his tablet.
One person.
Victoria's mother.
Celeste Sloan.
Daniel looked at Victoria.
She stopped breathing for a second.
"My mother came to see me."
"Where is she now?"
Victoria did not answer.
The officer checked the gate log.
Celeste had left twelve minutes earlier.
Noah cried again.
The paramedic said they needed to take him to the hospital.
Daniel followed the stretcher.
Emma moved with them.
Victoria called after him.
"Daniel."
He turned.
Her voice was softer.
"If something happens to him, you will finally understand who she really is."
Emma stared at her.
Then Emma said something Daniel had never heard from her before.
"You already tried this once."
Victoria's face drained of color.
Daniel stopped.
"Once?"
Emma looked at Noah.
Then at Daniel.
May you like
Her eyes filled with shame.
"With Rachel."
