Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Trap.

.The emergency board meeting began at nine without Daniel.
That was Arthur Crane's first mistake.
Daniel entered the Harrington Medical Systems tower at 9:07 with Lena Ortiz, Michael Sayer, and two independent forensic accountants.
The lobby screens still displayed his portrait.
FOUNDER AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER.
On the thirty-eighth floor, twelve directors were already seated around the glass conference table.
Arthur stood at the head.
He looked offended when Daniel walked in.
"You should not be here."
Daniel removed his coat.
"I own the building."
Arthur slid a document across the table.
"Not if the board accepts the emergency incapacity petition."
Daniel read the heading.
The petition claimed he had become unstable following his wife's death.
It cited aggressive behavior.
Financial recklessness.
Obsessive attachment to household staff.
The recent incident with Victoria.
The slap appeared in three separate paragraphs.
Daniel looked at Arthur.
"You filed this before the incident."
Arthur said nothing.
The date proved it.
The draft was created eleven days before Daniel struck Victoria.
The confrontation had not inspired the petition.
It had been engineered to support one already waiting.
Lena placed copies of the metadata in front of every director.
Arthur's face hardened.
"This is privileged legal material."
"No."
Lena remained calm.
"This is evidence of a fraud involving a minor's trust."
The directors shifted.
Arthur turned to Daniel.
"You are allowing outsiders to tear apart this company."
Daniel looked around the table.
"Who here knew about the petition?"
Three directors raised their hands.
Two looked ashamed.
One looked defiant.
That director was Helena Price, chair of the compensation committee.
She said, "We had concerns."
"About my mental fitness?"
"About volatility."
"Based on what?"
"Reports."
"Whose reports?"
Helena glanced at Arthur.
Daniel saw it.
So did Lena.
Arthur interrupted.
"This is not a trial."
Daniel placed Rachel's legitimate trust records on the table.
"No."
"It is an audit."
The independent accountants connected a laptop to the board display.
Transactions appeared.
Small transfers from Noah's trust-linked entities moved through consulting companies.
Those companies paid Preston Hale.
Preston paid Celeste.
Celeste paid Victoria.
Arthur received consulting fees through a separate offshore company.
The pattern extended back four years.
The room changed.
One director removed his glasses.
Another began photographing the screen.
Arthur stood.
"This proves nothing."
Michael laughed softly.
"It proves you are terrible at hiding invoices."
Arthur's face flushed.
Daniel asked about the company sale.
Arthur stopped.
"What sale?"
Michael placed a term sheet on the table.
Harrington Medical Systems had received an undisclosed offer for its genomic diagnostics division.
Nine hundred sixty million dollars.
Daniel had never seen it.
The proposal required approval from voting shareholders.
Noah's trust held eighteen percent directly and another twenty-three percent through Rachel's estate vehicle.
Forty-one percent.
Enough to decide the transaction when combined with Victoria's planned proxy votes.
Daniel stared at Arthur.
"You hid a billion-dollar offer from me."
Arthur looked at the directors.
"We were protecting the company from emotional interference."
Daniel almost smiled.
"That phrase again."
"Protecting."
Every thief in his life had learned to use the language of protection.
The accountants revealed the buyer.
Vale Meridian Partners.
Daniel recognized the surname.
Vale.
Celeste's maiden name.
The investment fund had been created less than a year earlier.
Its capital came from private lenders.
If the sale closed, the buyer would acquire the diagnostics patents.
The seller would receive nearly a billion dollars.
Then Arthur's group intended to distribute a special dividend.
Noah's trust would receive hundreds of millions in liquid cash.
Temporary trustee control would become enormously valuable.
The motive was no longer theoretical.
Arthur moved toward the door.
Two federal agents entered.
He stopped.
Lena had contacted them before the meeting.
Arthur looked at Daniel.
"You called the FBI on your own company?"
Daniel shook his head.
"On people using my company."
Arthur was advised not to leave.
The board voted to suspend him.
Helena Price requested her own attorney.
The other directors demanded an independent investigation.
Daniel should have felt triumphant.
Instead, he thought of Noah sleeping in Emma's arms while adults calculated his value in percentages.
His phone buzzed.
A message from the mansion security team.
VICTORIA RETURNED.
Daniel stared at it.
Impossible.
Police had instructed Victoria to remain at her hotel while the poisoning investigation continued.
Then another message arrived.
SHE HAS A COURT ORDER.
Lena read it.
"What order?"
Daniel called the house.
His security chief answered.
"Sir, Ms. Sloan is here with county deputies."
"Why?"
"Emergency temporary custody order."
Daniel felt the room disappear.
"Of Noah?"
"Yes."
"On what grounds?"
The chief hesitated.
"Your incapacity petition."
Lena grabbed her phone.
"That petition has not been heard."
The security chief continued.
"There's more."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"What?"
"The order says Emma Hayes is prohibited from contact with Noah."
Daniel stood.
"Do not let anyone remove my son."
Lena shook her head sharply.
"You cannot tell security to defy a court order."
Daniel looked at her.
"Then what do I do?"
"We beat it legally."
That answer felt unbearably slow.
Daniel ran for the elevator.
By the time he reached the lobby, Emma called.
She was whispering.
"Mr. Harrington."
"What is happening?"
"Victoria is downstairs."
"Stay with Noah."
"The deputies are coming up."
Daniel heard Noah crying in the background.
Emma's voice shook.
"She says they are taking him."
"Emma."
"Yes?"
"Listen to me."
"I am getting there."
"I need you to stay calm."
A door opened through the phone.
A deputy's voice sounded.
"Emma Hayes?"
Emma inhaled.
Daniel heard Victoria behind him.
"Take the child."
Then Noah screamed.
May you like
"Mama E!"
The call disconnected.
