Chapter 10 - The Mother and the Daughter.

.Celeste's surrender changed nothing and everything.
She was transported to a secure interview room.
Her attorney arrived before midnight.
Lena attended with federal investigators.
Daniel watched through a remote legal feed with permission as a victim representative.
Celeste looked tired for the first time in his life.
Without diamonds and perfect posture, she appeared older.
Still dangerous.
Still calculating.
Her attorney began.
"My client is prepared to provide truthful information regarding the financial conspiracy."
Lena asked about Rachel's hospice record.
Celeste took a breath.
"Victoria changed it."
"When?"
"After Rachel died."
"Why?"
"To create leverage."
"Against whom?"
"Arthur."
Daniel stared.
Celeste explained.
Victoria discovered Arthur had accessed Rachel's hospice portal.
She did not know why.
She copied the logs.
Then she altered one medication record to make it appear Arthur increased the dose.
She planned to use the falsified record if Arthur ever betrayed her.
Lena leaned forward.
"So the medication overdose record is fake?"
"The electronic change is fake."
"Did Rachel receive an overdose?"
Celeste looked directly at the camera.
"No."
"Did anyone accelerate Rachel's death?"
"No."
"How do you know?"
"I was there."
The room chilled.
Celia Stone remembered Celeste in the kitchen.
Celeste admitted she entered Rachel's room later.
"Rachel asked for me."
"Why?"
"She wanted me to leave Noah alone."
"Did you?"
Celeste's face tightened.
"No."
The honesty was ugly.
Useful.
She admitted conspiring to gain access to Noah's trust.
She admitted helping Victoria target Daniel.
She admitted paying Daniel's former security contractor to report household routines.
She admitted working with Preston and Arthur.
She denied drugging Noah.
Lena showed the nursery footage.
Celeste watched herself enter the hallway.
Then the cup.
Her expression did not change.
"That was Victoria."
Daniel stood.
The body shape looked like Celeste.
The clothes looked like Celeste.
The perfume Sophie recognized belonged to Celeste.
Lena paused the footage.
"You expect us to believe your daughter dressed like you?"
Celeste nodded.
"She has done it before."
The room went silent.
"Why?"
"Because if something went wrong, the children would identify me."
Lena stared.
Celeste continued.
"I raised a daughter who learned every bad lesson I taught her."
"I believed that made her strong."
"It made her better at betrayal than I was."
Daniel wanted to hate Celeste cleanly.
Her confession refused to make that easy.
She was guilty.
And she may also have been framed by her own daughter.
Lena asked why Celeste surrendered.
Celeste's eyes watered.
"Victoria sent me a message."
"What message?"
Celeste's attorney provided the phone.
Victoria wrote:
MOTHER, YOU ALWAYS SAID FAMILY TAKES THE FALL FOR FAMILY.
YOUR TURN.
Beneath it was a photograph of a passport and airline ticket in Celeste's name.
Victoria had planned Celeste's escape.
Then planned to blame her.
Celeste realized too late.
Lena asked where Victoria was.
Celeste laughed weakly.
"If I knew, I would have brought you there."
She did know one thing.
Victoria had a storage unit in Queens.
Police searched it.
Inside were clothes.
Cash.
Fake identification.
A suitcase for Noah.
Children's medication.
And a blue double-breasted pantsuit identical to the one Victoria wore during the hallway confrontation.
On one sleeve was dried apple juice.
The fabric carried traces of the sedating antihistamine found in Noah's cup.
The implication was powerful.
Not final.
But powerful.
The storage unit also contained wigs and clothing matching Celeste.
Victoria had rehearsed impersonation.
Sophie had smelled Celeste's perfume.
Because Victoria wore it.
The conspiracy became stranger.
Victoria had begun framing even her own mother.
Lena asked Celeste why Victoria wanted Noah's trust so desperately if they believed Harrington money already belonged to their family.
Celeste looked ashamed.
"Debt."
"What debt?"
"Vale Meridian never had real capital."
"The purchase offer was financed through bridge loans."
"If the diagnostics sale failed, Victoria personally guaranteed seventy million."
Daniel stared.
"With what?"
"Future trust control."
Victoria had borrowed against assets she did not own.
The wedding deadline was not about greed alone.
It was about insolvency.
If she failed to gain control, lenders would come after her.
If the fraud surfaced, criminal exposure followed.
She had trapped herself.
Then built more crimes to escape the earlier ones.
At 2:16 a.m., Lena received a call.
A traffic camera found Victoria's car.
It crossed into New Jersey.
Then disappeared near a private marina.
Police searched the docks.
Her car was empty.
The glove compartment contained a ferry ticket.
Destination: Nantucket.
False lead.
Inside the trunk was something else.
Emma's personnel file.
Rachel's letters.
And a child's passport.
Noah's real passport.
Daniel had kept it in the mansion safe.
Victoria had stolen it days earlier.
A ferry manifest showed a woman traveling with a small child named Nathan Sloan.
But Victoria did not have Noah.
He was asleep upstairs at the mansion.
Daniel understood immediately.
Another child was being used.
Lily looked at the manifest.
Age: 3.
Light hair.
Male.
Lena called the ferry company.
Security footage showed Victoria boarding.
She carried a sleeping toddler.
Daniel felt sick.
"Whose child is that?"
No one knew.
Then Emma screamed from the doorway.
She had seen the surveillance still.
"That's Jacob."
Daniel turned.
"Who?"
May you like
Emma's face went white.
"My sister's son."
