Chapter 5 - The Name on the Report.

.Daniel read the paternity result until the numbers blurred.
Zero percent.
The report listed his name.
Rachel's name.
Noah's date of birth.
Everything looked authentic.
Emma covered her mouth.
Lena did not react.
"Do not assume a document is true because it is formatted professionally."
Daniel looked at her.
The reminder should have been obvious after everything that happened.
It was not.
Fear had made the page feel final.
The laboratory named on the report still operated in Boston.
Lena called.
The lab director checked the accession number.
No match.
The signature belonged to a technician who left the company five years earlier.
The format was outdated.
The report was fake.
Daniel's relief came with anger.
Victoria knew exactly which truth-shaped weapon would hurt most.
The forensic team examined the metadata.
The PDF had been created nine months earlier.
On Preston Hale's office computer.
Rachel never saw it.
She never lied to Daniel.
The file was bait designed for him to discover later.
A delayed fracture.
Lena found another document beside it.
A draft petition challenging Daniel's custody rights based on non-paternity.
The petition named Victoria as proposed emergency guardian.
It had never been filed.
But it was ready.
Daniel stared at the dates.
Victoria created the false paternity report before he proposed.
Before the engagement photographs.
Before the wedding venue.
Before she moved into the mansion.
The relationship had been a legal strategy wearing romance.
Emma looked at him.
"I am sorry."
Daniel almost laughed.
"People keep apologizing to me for things Victoria did."
"You lost something."
"What?"
"The life you thought you had."
That was true.
Betrayal did not only remove a person.
It destroyed memories by changing what they meant.
Every vacation became surveillance.
Every conversation about Noah became evidence gathering.
Every kiss became suspect.
Daniel hated that more than the money.
At sunrise, Noah was released.
Daniel took him home.
Emma rode beside him.
The mansion appeared beautiful in the early light.
He wanted to burn every chandelier.
Instead, he carried his son inside.
Noah immediately reached for Emma.
Daniel handed him over without hesitation.
That small act felt like a correction.
Claire stayed with Sophie.
Police remained in the house.
Daniel met Lena in the study.
They reviewed Rachel's letter again.
Near the end, Rachel mentioned one person by initials.
M.S.
She wrote:
If anything happens to me, M.S. has the original trust records.
Daniel could not identify M.S.
Emma could.
"Michael Sayer."
"Who is that?"
"Rachel's brother."
Daniel stared.
Rachel had no brother.
At least, she never told him about one.
Emma explained that Michael was Rachel's half brother.
Older by nine years.
Estranged from their father.
He lived in Vermont.
Rachel kept the relationship private because her family disapproved of him.
"Why?"
"He testified against their father in a fraud case."
Daniel almost smiled bitterly.
Of course.
Every family in this story had hidden someone who told the truth.
Lena located Michael.
He answered on the fourth call.
When Daniel introduced himself, Michael said nothing for a long time.
Then he asked one question.
"Did Celeste finally make her move?"
Daniel stood.
"You knew."
"I knew enough."
Michael agreed to meet that afternoon.
He arrived at the mansion in an old pickup truck.
He wore jeans and a canvas jacket.
He looked nothing like Rachel except for the eyes.
Noah stared at him.
Michael knelt.
"You have your mother's eyebrows."
Daniel almost lost his composure.
They went to the study.
Michael brought a metal case.
Inside were notarized copies of Rachel's trust records.
Bank statements.
Private investigator reports.
And a sealed DNA kit.
Daniel stared.
Michael noticed.
"Rachel ordered a legitimate paternity test after someone sent her a fake one."
Daniel opened the envelope.
The result was simple.
Probability of paternity: 99.9997%.
He laughed.
It sounded broken.
Michael continued.
"She knew someone would eventually try that lie."
"She prepared for it."
Daniel looked at the papers.
"Why didn't you come to me?"
Michael's expression hardened.
"Rachel asked me the same thing."
"What did you tell her?"
"That your family office was compromised."
"Preston Hale worked inside it."
"We did not know who else did."
Daniel understood.
Trust had become dangerous.
Michael then opened a second compartment.
Inside was a photograph.
Victoria stood outside Preston Hale's office.
The date was nearly a year before Rachel died.
Celeste stood beside her.
And behind them was another man.
Daniel recognized him.
His own chief financial officer.
Arthur Crane.
Arthur had worked for Harrington Medical Systems for nineteen years.
Daniel had trusted him with company acquisitions.
Arthur chaired the committee overseeing Noah's trust distributions.
Daniel whispered, "No."
Michael tapped the photograph.
"Rachel thought Hale was the lawyer."
"Celeste was the recruiter."
"But Arthur was the one inside your company."
Daniel sat down.
The conspiracy was not a mother and daughter chasing wealth.
It was embedded in his business.
His engagement was only one part.
Lena asked Michael what Arthur wanted.
Michael answered.
"The same thing all of them wanted."
"Control of Noah's voting shares before the company sale."
Daniel looked at him.
"What company sale?"
Michael frowned.
"You don't know?"
Daniel's phone rang.
Arthur Crane's name appeared.
Daniel answered.
Arthur sounded calm.
"Daniel, we have a problem."
Daniel looked at Lena.
"What problem?"
Arthur continued.
"The board has called an emergency meeting."
"Why?"
"Because someone filed documents declaring you mentally unfit to serve as CEO."
Daniel stopped breathing.
May you like
Arthur said one more thing.
"And Victoria has requested temporary control of Noah's shares."
