Chapter 11 - The Child on the Ferry.

.Jacob Hayes was three years old.

He had light hair.

He was small for his age.

From behind, wrapped in a gray coat, he could pass for Noah in bad security footage.

Emma called her sister with shaking hands.

No answer.

She called again.

Voicemail.

Daniel watched her face collapse.

"Where was Jacob today?"

"Daycare."

"Which one?"

"Little Pines in Queens."

Lena called local police.

The daycare director answered at 2:41 a.m.

Jacob had been picked up at 4:16 that afternoon.

The woman presented approved identification.

Emma's sister, Hannah Hayes.

The signature matched.

The woman wore a surgical mask because she claimed to have a cold.

Security footage showed blonde hair beneath a knit cap.

The car used for pickup had temporary plates.

The daycare had called Hannah.

Someone answered from Hannah's phone and confirmed the pickup.

Emma whispered, "Where is my sister?"

Police went to Hannah's apartment.

The door was unlocked.

Hannah was inside.

Alive.

Unconscious.

Paramedics found a sedative in her system.

No major injuries.

Her phone was gone.

Victoria had drugged one mother, stolen one child, and created a video trail designed to resemble the kidnapping of Noah.

Daniel felt the motive form.

"If security footage shows her leaving with a child everyone thinks is Noah, what does that accomplish?"

Lena answered.

"It makes a future disappearance credible."

Emma stared.

"Future?"

Victoria had created a rehearsal.

Or a false timeline.

If she later claimed Noah was already with her, Jacob's image could support the lie.

If she tried to leave the country with Noah later, investigators might search the wrong route.

Jacob was camouflage.

Daniel's stomach twisted.

A three-year-old child had become a visual substitute in an adult fraud.

The ferry had already departed.

Coast Guard units were contacted.

Nantucket police waited at the terminal.

Daniel wanted to fly there.

Lena refused.

"You are a victim and a witness."

"You are not a tactical unit."

Emma was worse.

"He's my nephew."

"I know."

"I cannot sit here."

"You can help us understand Victoria."

Emma shook her head.

"I don't understand her."

Lily spoke quietly.

"She wants people to chase the story she prepared."

Everyone looked at her.

Lily held the ferry image.

"She wanted us to see this."

Daniel frowned.

"Why?"

"If she wanted to disappear, she wouldn't use a public ferry camera."

Lena nodded.

The ticket.

The child's visible face.

The stolen passport in the car.

Everything pointed too neatly toward Nantucket.

A designed trail.

The ferry was a decoy.

They called the crew.

A search of the passenger areas began.

Victoria was not found.

Neither was Jacob.

But a cleaner discovered a gray child's coat in a restroom.

The woman and toddler had left the ferry before departure.

How?

Vehicle deck.

A delivery truck boarded after passengers.

Security footage showed a woman carrying a sleeping child enter the truck's cargo compartment.

The truck left the terminal before the ferry cast off.

Destination records showed it belonged to a floral company.

The same company contracted for Daniel and Victoria's canceled wedding.

Daniel remembered Victoria approving the vendor herself.

Police traced the truck.

GPS had been disabled.

The driver was found at a rest stop.

He claimed he did not know anyone entered the cargo area.

He heard movement once.

He assumed flowers shifted.

At 3:22 a.m., a toll camera caught the truck heading north.

Not east.

Victoria was moving toward Connecticut.

Toward Rachel's lake house.

Emma stood.

"She's going to the house."

Daniel agreed.

Rachel's red box.

The empty safe.

The old evidence.

Victoria still believed something remained there.

Lena coordinated state police.

No one contacted the house caretaker because none remained.

The property had been sealed after the previous break-in.

At 4:10 a.m., thermal cameras detected two people inside.

One adult.

One child.

Police surrounded the house.

Victoria called Daniel.

This time, Lena allowed him to answer under monitoring.

"Daniel."

Her voice was tired.

"Where is Jacob?"

"Safe."

"Let him go."

"I need something first."

"What?"

"The original recording Rachel made with Arthur."

Daniel looked at Lena.

They had several recordings.

Victoria was specific.

"Which one?"

"The one she hid in the red box."

"There was no Arthur recording in the red box."

Silence.

Victoria did not believe him.

"Do not lie to me."

"I'm not."

"Rachel recorded everyone."

"Not Arthur."

Victoria's breathing changed.

She had risked everything for evidence that might not exist.

Daniel realized Arthur had told her there was a recording.

Maybe he used the lie to control her.

The conspirators had been deceiving one another.

Victoria spoke again.

"Bring the hard drive."

"No."

"I have a child."

"That is exactly why I am not negotiating property for him."

Emma stared at Daniel.

His voice remained steady.

"Jacob is not a bargaining chip."

Victoria laughed.

"You sound like Rachel."

"I wish I had listened to her sooner."

The line went quiet.

Then Jacob cried in the background.

"Aunt Emma."

Emma covered her mouth.

Victoria said, "You have thirty minutes."

Lena wrote on a pad.

KEEP HER TALKING.

Daniel asked why she married him.

Victoria answered immediately.

"Because I loved you."

He almost laughed.

"You knew Rachel before we met."

"I knew about you."

"That isn't the same."

"You were lonely."

"You were kind."

"You looked at me like I was not my mother's daughter."

For the first time, the answer sounded human.

Then she ruined it.

"And you had everything she said should have been ours."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Love and entitlement had grown together until Victoria could no longer separate them.

"What did you think would happen after the wedding?"

"We would be a family."

"While you stole Noah's trust?"

"I was recovering what was stolen from mine."

"Noah did not steal from you."

Victoria shouted.

"His name did."

Jacob began crying harder.

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Victoria, look at him."

"What?"

"Look at Jacob."

Silence.

"He is three."

"He has nothing to do with Charles Harrington, Rachel, Arthur, your mother, or me."

"Let one person remain a person."

For several seconds, Victoria said nothing.

Then a sound came through the phone.

A door opening.

A police voice.

Victoria gasped.

The call dropped.

At the lake house, officers had entered through the basement while Daniel kept her talking.

They found Jacob in the kitchen.

He was frightened.

He was unharmed.

Victoria was not there.

An upstairs window stood open.

Footprints crossed the frost toward the woods.

Police searched with dogs.

The tracks ended at the lake.

A small motorboat was missing.

Victoria had escaped again.

But she left one thing behind.

On Rachel's dining table sat the black second smartphone.

The same phone she tried to erase in the mansion.

Its screen was unlocked.

One message remained open.

It had been sent from Arthur Crane hours earlier.

THERE IS NO RECORDING.

I MADE IT UP.

YOU WERE ALWAYS THE FALL PERSON.

Victoria finally learned the truth.

May you like

She had not been the mastermind.

She had been the final shield.
