Chapter 1 - The Glass Slipper Shatters

The crystal chandelier cast a blinding, fractured light across the grand ballroom.
Silence had fallen over the gala, thick and suffocating.
Clara stood entirely alone in the center of the marble floor.
Her hands rested defensively over the heavy curve of her pregnant belly.
The soft mauve fabric of her dress offered no armor against the glaring eyes of high society.
Eleanor, the formidable matriarch of the family, stepped forward.
Her dark burgundy dress rustled ominously with every step she took.
Eleanor’s face was twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated contempt.
She reached out and gripped Clara’s arms with surprising, painful force.
"Search her!"
Eleanor's voice echoed off the gilded walls, sharp and unyielding.
"Prove your innocence."
Clara felt a cold knot tighten in her chest.
She looked around the room, seeking a single friendly face among the sea of elite guests.
Beatrice stood nearby, draped in elegant white silk and dripping with pearls.
A cruel, expectant smirk played on Beatrice's perfectly painted lips.
Clara yanked her arms out of Eleanor’s iron grip.
Her breathing grew shallow, but she refused to let the tears fall in front of these people.
With a swift, defiant motion, Clara unclasped her black designer clutch.
She let it drop from her trembling fingers.
The heavy purse hit the polished floor with a loud, hollow thud.
Lipsticks, compacts, and a silver mirror scattered wildly across the marble.
"There," Clara whispered, her voice shaking but resolute.
Julian stepped out from the shadows of the crowd.
His dark blue velvet tuxedo made him look like a stranger, cold and impossibly distant.
Clara looked at the man she loved, desperately hoping for a defense that never came.
Julian’s jaw was set tight as he delivered the final, agonizing blow.
"Just let them search."
The betrayal stung worse than Eleanor’s physical grip ever could.
Julian had chosen his family’s paranoid legacy over the mother of his unborn child.
Clara closed her eyes for a fraction of a second.
When she opened them, the fear had completely vanished from her hazel eyes.
She was done playing the helpless victim in their twisted aristocratic games.
Ignoring the spilled contents of her purse, she reached into the hidden seam of her dress.
Her fingers wrapped around the smooth, cool metal of her smartphone.
Eleanor and Beatrice watched in stunned silence as she pulled it out instead of backing down.
Clara kept her eyes locked on Julian as she tapped a single contact on her glowing screen.
She brought the phone to her ear, taking one slow, steadying breath.
The entire room held its collective breath, waiting for her to break down.

Instead, Clara stood taller, her posture radiating a sudden, terrifying calm.

"Dad," Clara whispered into the receiver, her voice ringing clearly in the quiet room.
"It's time."
