Chapter 5 - The Faded Roses

Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Sterling penthouse.
Clara sat in a plush armchair, sipping warm herbal tea.
She looked out over the sprawling city skyline, feeling a profound sense of peace.
The frantic anxiety of the past six months had completely vanished overnight.
She placed a gentle hand on her stomach, feeling a tiny, reassuring kick against her palm.
"Good morning, little one," she whispered softly to the empty room.
The heavy oak doors of the study opened with a soft, muted click.
Arthur walked in, holding a steaming mug of black coffee and a thick leather folder.
"How did you sleep, sweetheart?"
"Better than I have in a very long time," Clara replied honestly.
Arthur smiled, but his sharp eyes held a serious, protective edge as he sat opposite her.
"Security called up from the main lobby five minutes ago."
Clara felt a brief flicker of apprehension, but it quickly faded into quiet resolve.
"Let me guess, Julian is downstairs demanding to see me."
Arthur nodded slowly, setting his coffee down on the glass table.
"He has been waiting in the reception area for an hour."
"He brought extravagant flowers, desperate apologies, and a very nervous corporate lawyer."
Clara let out a small, weary sigh.
"Send him up, Dad."
Arthur raised a silver eyebrow in genuine surprise.
"Are you entirely sure about that, Clara?"
"I am," Clara said, her voice steady and resolute.
"I need to close this door completely on my own."
Ten minutes later, the elevator doors chimed, and Julian stepped into the sunlit study.
He looked uncharacteristically disheveled, his usual pristine appearance marred by dark circles under his eyes.
He held a massive bouquet of white roses, looking entirely out of place in the modern, minimalist room.
"Clara, thank God," Julian breathed out, immediately stepping forward.
Arthur smoothly stepped into his path, crossing his arms over his broad chest.
"You will stay right there, Julian."
Julian stopped dead in his tracks, swallowing hard under the older man's icy glare.
Clara stood up, smoothing the soft fabric of her comfortable maternity dress.
"Why are you here, Julian?"
"To beg for your forgiveness," Julian pleaded, his voice actually cracking.
"I was wrong, my mother was horribly wrong, and I will do whatever it takes to fix this."
Clara looked at the expensive bouquet of roses, feeling nothing but a profound sense of pity.
"You cannot fix a foundation built on distrust and cowardice."
"I was caught off guard, Clara, please!"
"You were tested, Julian, and you failed."
She stepped slightly closer, stopping safely behind her father's protective presence.
"You let your family intentionally humiliate the mother of your child in front of half the city."
"That is a choice you have to live with, but it is absolutely not a life I will accept for my baby."
Julian dropped his gaze to the polished floor, the roses trembling in his grip.
"I want my attorney to handle the custody and financial arrangements moving forward," Clara stated firmly.
"Do not attempt to contact me directly ever again."

She turned her back on him, walking toward the window to watch the quiet city below.
"Show him out, please, Dad."
