Chapter 6 - The Boardroom and the Nursery

The Sterling Corporation boardroom was a symphony of polished mahogany and glass.
Arthur sat at the head of the massive table, radiating absolute authority.
Across from him sat Eleanor and the senior partners of her family's firm.
They looked significantly smaller without the glittering backdrop of their grand ballroom.
The proposed merger documents sat entirely untouched in the center of the table.
Arthur slid a single, thin folder across the polished wood.
"The original terms are completely off the table," Arthur stated evenly.
Eleanor bristled, though her usual haughty posture was visibly strained.
"You cannot punish an entire company for a personal misunderstanding, Arthur."
Arthur leaned forward, his silver eyes cold and unyielding.
"I can, and I absolutely will."
"You attempted to frame my daughter for grand larceny to preserve your outdated social standing."
"This new contract severs all proposed joint ventures and demands immediate repayment of the bridge loans we provided."
Julian’s father, who had remained painfully quiet, finally spoke up.
"Arthur, this will bankrupt our secondary holdings within the fiscal year."
"Then I suggest you learn to live without them," Arthur replied bluntly.
He stood up, buttoning his tailored suit jacket with a final, dismissive gesture.
"My attorneys will be in touch regarding my grandchild's legal boundaries."
"You will not have access to this child, nor will you use them for social leverage."
Meanwhile, miles away from the corporate bloodbath, Clara was painting.
The new nursery in the penthouse was bathed in warm, golden afternoon sunlight.
She brushed a soft, soothing shade of sage green onto the accent wall.
She wore worn denim overalls, her fiery hair tied up in a messy bun.
She hummed a quiet, happy tune to the baby resting heavily in her belly.
For the first time in her adult life, she felt entirely in control of her own destiny.
There were no expectations to be the perfect, submissive society wife.
There were no vicious whispers from women like Beatrice or Eleanor.
There was only the quiet promise of a new life and a loving family.
The door opened gently, and Arthur walked in, loosening his silk tie.
He smiled warmly as he took in the sight of his daughter creating a home.
"It looks beautiful in here, Clara."
Clara wiped a stray smudge of green paint from her pale cheek.
"How did the meeting go, Dad?"
"Exactly as it needed to," Arthur said softly, picking up a spare paintbrush.
"The past is handled, sweetheart."
May you like
He dipped the brush in the paint tray and stepped up to the wall beside her.
"Now, we just focus on the future."
