Chapter 3 - The Weight of Diamonds

The silence in the room stretched until it felt brittle enough to snap.

Julian took a hesitant step forward, his hands raised in a desperate gesture of peace.

"Mr. Sterling, there has been a terrible misunderstanding."

Arthur's gaze did not waver from the young man who had just betrayed his daughter.

"The only misunderstanding was my belief that you had a spine, Julian."

Eleanor suddenly rushed forward, her aristocratic poise completely crumbling.

"Arthur, please, we had no idea who she actually was!"

"That is precisely the problem, Eleanor."

Arthur’s voice was as cold as the winter wind rattling the ballroom windows.

"You judged her not by her character, but by the lack of a pedigree you could exploit."

He snapped his fingers, a sharp sound that echoed across the marble floor.

One of his suited men stepped forward instantly, holding a small velvet bag.

"We took the liberty of checking the security footage in the eastern hallway."

The security man tipped the dark bag upside down.

A heavy, glittering diamond necklace spilled into his gloved palm.

Eleanor gasped loudly, her hands flying to her mouth in genuine terror.

"You see," Arthur continued smoothly, "my security team is incredibly thorough."

"They watched Eleanor slip the heirloom into a decorative vase outside the washroom."

Beatrice took a slow, horrified step away from the older matriarch.

"Aunt Eleanor... you framed her?"

Eleanor opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out.

Clara stepped out from under her father’s protective arm.

She looked at the diamond necklace, then at the woman who had tried to ruin her life.

"You wanted me gone so badly that you were willing to send an innocent woman to prison."

Clara’s voice was remarkably steady, completely devoid of the fear she had felt earlier.

"You couldn't stand the thought of a nobody carrying the next family heir."

Julian reached out, his eyes begging for a forgiveness he did not deserve.

"Clara, please, I didn't know she did this."

"But you didn't trust me either, Julian."

Clara looked down at the heavy, expensive engagement ring on her left hand.

With deliberate slowness, she slid the massive diamond off her trembling finger.

She didn't even hand it to Julian.

She simply let it drop onto the floor next to her spilled makeup.

"Keep your ring and your paranoid legacy."

Clara turned her back on the man she had almost married.

"I am going home."
