Chapter 4 - The Quiet Ride Home

The heavy oak doors closed firmly behind them, cutting off the chaotic murmurs of the ballroom.

Clara walked beside her father down the long, carpeted hallway.

Her legs felt like lead, the adrenaline finally leaving her exhausted body.

Arthur kept his hand protectively on her lower back, guiding her toward the grand exit.

The cool night air hit her face as they stepped out into the paved courtyard.

A sleek black limousine idled by the curb, the driver already holding the rear door open.

Clara sank into the plush leather seat with a deep, shaky sigh.

She rested both hands gently over her pregnant belly, feeling a sudden, reassuring flutter inside.

Arthur slid in beside her, his stern demeanor softening the moment the doors locked.

He poured a glass of sparkling water from the minibar and handed it to her.

"Drink this, sweetheart."

Clara took a small sip, letting the cool liquid soothe her dry throat.

"Thank you for coming," she whispered, leaning her head against the tinted window.

"I should have come sooner."

Arthur's voice was thick with a regret that bordered on pure anger.

"I never should have let you walk into that viper's nest without my security detail."

"It was my choice, Dad."

Clara turned to look at him in the dim, warm light of the cabin.

"I needed to know if Julian loved me enough to stand by me when it truly mattered."

Arthur reached out and gently squeezed her trembling hand.

"And now you have your answer."

A single tear escaped her eye, but she quickly wiped it away with the back of her hand.

"It hurts, but I am glad I know the truth before this baby is born."

The limousine pulled away from the sprawling estate, leaving the glittering nightmare far behind them.

Clara looked down at her bare left hand, the absence of the heavy diamond feeling incredibly light.

"What happens now?"

Clara's voice was barely louder than the smooth hum of the engine.

"Now, we go home," Arthur said firmly.

"You will rest, and you will prepare for the safe arrival of my grandchild."

He looked out the window, his jaw tightening slightly in the shadows.

"As for the upcoming corporate merger with Julian's family, I believe the terms have just drastically changed."

Clara closed her eyes, finally allowing herself to feel completely safe.

The battle was over, and for the first time in months, she could actually breathe.
