Chapter 2 - The Sterling Arrival

The silence in the ballroom shattered into a hundred frantic whispers.
Eleanor let out a sharp, incredulous laugh.
"Who on earth are you calling?"
Eleanor sneered, taking a step closer to the scattered makeup on the floor.
"Your mechanic father won't save you from a grand larceny charge."
Clara didn't flinch.
She simply lowered the phone and slid it back into her hidden pocket.
Julian took a hesitant step forward, his velvet jacket catching the chandelier's light.
"Clara, please just cooperate."
Julian’s voice held a pathetic note of pleading mixed with desperate authority.
"If you didn't take the heirloom necklace, just let security check you properly."
Clara looked at him as if seeing him for the very first time.
The man she had promised her life to was nothing but a hollow shell of privilege.
"The necklace is exactly where your mother hid it," Clara said calmly.
Beatrice gasped dramatically, clutching her pearl-draped neckline.
"How dare you accuse Eleanor of such a cheap trick!"
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the ballroom swung open with a deafening crash.
Four men in immaculate black suits strode into the room.
They immediately flanked the entrance, their expressions carved from stone.
Behind them walked a man who commanded the very air in the room.
Arthur Sterling had silver hair at his temples and a gaze that could cut glass.
He was a legend in the financial district, a ruthless but fiercely principled titan.
Eleanor’s face drained of all its haughty color.
"Arthur Sterling?"
Eleanor’s voice was barely a squeak.
"What is the meaning of this intrusion?"
Arthur ignored her completely.
He walked straight through the parted sea of elite guests.
His eyes were locked solely on the pregnant woman standing alone in the center.
Arthur stopped a few feet away and offered a gentle, sorrowful smile.
"Are you alright, my dear?"
Clara felt the first genuine tear slip down her pale cheek.
"I am now, Dad."
A collective gasp ripped through the crowded ballroom.
Julian looked back and forth between Clara and the billionaire titan.
"Dad?"
Julian’s voice broke in utter confusion.
"You told me your father passed away when you were a child."
Clara turned to face her fiancé one last time.
"I told you the man who raised me passed away."
She lifted her chin, finally stepping out of the shadow of their judgment.
"I never told you about my biological father."
Arthur placed a warm, protective arm around his daughter's shoulders.
He looked down at the scattered contents of her purse on the marble floor.
Then, his icy glare fell upon Eleanor.
"I allowed my daughter to enter this family to see if you were worthy of our upcoming corporate merger."
May you like
Arthur's voice was low, yet it carried to the darkest corners of the room.
"It appears you are not even worthy of my daughter's basic humanity."
