Chapter 7 - The First Snow

Winter arrived in the city with a quiet, breathtaking elegance.
Thick white snowflakes drifted slowly past the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse.
Clara stood wrapped in a thick wool cardigan, watching the city transform into a snow globe.
She rested her hands on her stomach, which was now heavy and uncomfortably tight.
It had been exactly three months since she had walked out of that disastrous gala.
True to his word, Arthur had built an impenetrable fortress around her.
Julian’s desperate letters had been systematically intercepted and returned unopened.
Eleanor’s family had slowly faded from the society pages, their financial ruin a quiet whisper among the elite.
Clara felt a sudden, sharp twinge radiate across her lower back.
She let out a soft gasp, gripping the edge of the cold window sill for support.
"Dad?" she called out, her voice slightly breathless.
Arthur appeared from the hallway almost instantly, tossing his reading glasses onto a side table.
"What is it, Clara?"
Arthur crossed the room in three long strides, his face etched with immediate concern.
"I think it is time," Clara breathed, forcing a nervous but excited smile.
Arthur did not panic.
He simply nodded, his calm demeanor instantly grounding her rising anxiety.
"I will call the driver and alert Dr. Evans," Arthur said smoothly.
He gently wrapped a warm scarf around her neck, making sure she was perfectly comfortable.
"We have plenty of time, sweetheart."
The ride to the private maternity hospital was quiet and remarkably peaceful.
There were no paparazzi, no demanding in-laws, and no judgmental stares.
There was only the quiet hum of the heater and her father’s steady hand holding hers.
As they pulled up to the private entrance, another sharp contraction took Clara’s breath away.
"You are doing wonderfully, Clara," Arthur reassured her, helping her out of the warm car.
The medical staff was waiting, guiding her swiftly into a pristine, warmly lit birthing suite.
Clara changed into a comfortable gown, feeling the reality of the moment finally wash over her.
She was really doing this, entirely on her own terms.
Arthur sat quietly in the chair beside her bed, never once letting go of her hand.
"Are you scared?"
Arthur asked softly, brushing a stray lock of fiery red hair from her sweaty forehead.
"A little," Clara admitted, her voice trembling as another wave of pain hit.
"But I am mostly just ready to meet him."
May you like
Arthur smiled, a deep, genuine expression of immense pride.
"He is an incredibly lucky little boy to have you as his mother."
