Chapter 1 - The Weight of the Marble

The sprawling Sterling estate was a monument to wealth, built entirely of cold, unyielding marble and echoing silence. For Elara, it was simply a place to survive. At seven months pregnant, the traditional gray-and-white maid’s uniform felt more restrictive by the day, the starched collar a constant reminder of her place at the very bottom of the estate's hierarchy.

Elara wiped down the grand double staircase of the foyer, her breath coming in shallow, measured rhythms. She had taken this job out of desperation. The father of her child was a ghost, a mistake from a past she had firmly locked away, leaving her with nothing but a growing belly and a fierce, protective instinct. She didn't mind the hard work; the physical exhaustion kept her mind quiet.

Above her, the massive crystal chandelier caught the morning light, casting fractured rainbows across the floor. It was a beautiful, lonely cage. Her employer, Daniel Sterling, was a man of shadows and sharp edges. Rumored to have deep ties to the city's criminal underworld, he ruled his business and his home with an iron fist. Yet, in the rare moments Elara saw him passing through the halls in his impeccably tailored three-piece suits, he never raised his voice. He didn't have to; his presence demanded absolute submission. Elara kept her head down, choosing to be invisible. It was the safest way to live.
