Chapter 18 - Into the Light

Late one evening, as a gentle snow began to fall outside the tall estate windows, Daniel sat in his study with his top lieutenants. The atmosphere was heavy, thick with anticipation.

"I am restructuring the organization," Daniel announced, sliding a thick stack of legal documents across the mahogany desk. "Effective immediately, we are liquidating all illicit operations at the docks. The smuggling routes are being shut down or sold off to independent buyers outside the city."

His men exchanged stunned glances. "Boss, that's thirty percent of our revenue," one of them ventured cautiously.

"I don't care about the revenue," Daniel replied, his voice leaving no room for argument. "We are heavily invested in commercial real estate and legitimate shipping. That is where our focus goes now. I am building a clean legacy. If any of you have a problem operating entirely within the law, you will be given a generous severance today. If you stay, there is zero tolerance for the old ways."

He was stepping out of the shadows. The transition would be dangerous and complex, but as he looked at a framed photograph of Elara and Lily on his desk, Daniel knew there was no other choice. He would not let his daughter grow up in the crosshairs of a criminal underworld.
