Chapter 3 - The Eve of the Gala

Preparations for the annual Sterling Gala sent the household into a frenzy. It was a black-tie affair, meant to showcase Daniel’s power and legitimacy to the city's elite. Victoria was in her element, barking orders and changing floral arrangements by the hour. She deliberately piled on Elara’s workload, assigning her tasks that required heavy lifting or constant bending.
"The silver needs polishing, and I want those marble floors scrubbed until I can see my reflection," Victoria commanded, her champagne-colored, high-slit gown rustling as she paced.
By the evening of the gala, Elara’s back screamed in agony, and her swollen feet throbbed. The mansion filled with laughter, the clinking of crystal glasses, and the soft hum of classical music. Guests in tuxedos and evening gowns glided across the floors Elara had painstakingly cleaned. She was assigned to the coat check, a blessedly stationary job, but Victoria had other plans.

Elara took a deep breath, balancing the heavy silver tray, and made her way toward the grand staircase, her heart pounding with a sense of impending dread.
