Chapter 13 - The Shift in the Shadows

The final weeks of Elara’s pregnancy transformed the East Wing into a bizarre but beautiful sanctuary. Daniel’s imposing oak desk sat in the corner of her room, covered in shipping manifests and secure laptops. Elara spent her days propped up against a mountain of pillows, reading or simply watching him work.
The juxtaposition was jarring. In one breath, Daniel would coldly dismantle a rival’s smuggling route over the phone, his voice a low, lethal baritone. In the next, he would mute the call, walk over to her bedside with a glass of ice water, and gently ask if her back was aching.
One rainy afternoon, as Daniel sat reviewing a ledger, Elara gasped softly, dropping her book. Daniel was out of his chair in a millisecond.
"What is it? Are you in pain?" he asked, hovering over her.

"No, no," Elara laughed, a genuine, melodic sound that warmed the room. She took his large, calloused hand and placed it flat against her stomach. "She’s just active today."
Beneath his palm, a tiny, distinct kick pushed outward. Daniel’s breath hitched. The ruthless syndicate boss, a man feared across the city, stared at Elara's belly with wide, reverent eyes. For the longest time, he didn't pull his hand away, silently marveling at the fragile, fierce life growing beneath his touch. In that quiet moment, the invisible wall between the boss and the former maid finally dissolved.
