Chapter 10: Motives and Consequences

The woman in blue leaned forward, her hands clasped tightly together.

“She was terrified,” she said. “You have to understand that.”

The man turned his gaze toward her.

“Do I?” he asked.

“She thought you would leave,” she continued. “That this… this image you built—this perfect future—it depended on a family. On a child.”

The man’s expression tightened slightly.

“You assumed a lot,” he said.

“We didn’t assume,” she replied. “We watched.”

That answer lingered.

Because it carried truth of its own.

The blonde woman wiped at her eyes, though no tears had fully fallen yet.

“I just needed time,” she said. “To figure out what to do. To find another way.”

“Another way to what?” the man asked.

“To keep everything from falling apart.”

The girl watched quietly, her small hands folded in her lap.

She didn’t understand all the words.

But she understood something else.

The feeling.
