Chapter 16: A Different Kind of Truth

The banquet hall had begun to empty.

Chairs were pushed in. Candles burned lower. Conversations faded into goodbyes.

But at their table, something new was forming.

Not perfect.

Not easy.

But real.

“I think,” the man said finally, “we stop pretending.”

The words were simple.

But they carried weight.

“What does that mean?” the woman in blue asked.

“It means no more building things on fear,” he replied. “No more shaping reality just to keep it from falling apart.”

The blonde woman looked down at her hands.

“And us?” she asked.

He met her gaze.

“That depends on whether we can start over honestly,” he said.

Not a promise.

Not a rejection.

Just truth.

The girl shifted slightly in her chair, then spoke quietly.

“Starting over is okay,” she said. “As long as it’s real.”

The adults looked at her.

And for the first time that night—

there was no discomfort in her words.

Only clarity.

The man gave a small nod.

“You might be the only one at this table who understands that,” he said.

The girl didn’t smile.

She just nodded back.

Because to her—

it had never been complicated.

Truth wasn’t something to manage.

It was something to live with.

And as the final guests left the hall, and the lights dimmed just slightly—

the four of them sat there, no longer pretending.

Not fixed.

Not finished.

May you like

But finally—

honest.
