Chapter 13: The Night Air

Outside, the air felt cooler than expected.

The man stepped away from the glowing banquet hall, its golden lights fading behind him as the quiet of the night took over. The distant sound of traffic hummed softly, grounding him in something real—something not staged.

He loosened his tie slightly, exhaling a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding.

For years, his life had been built on control. Decisions made carefully. Risks calculated. Outcomes predicted.

But tonight—

a child had undone all of it with one sentence.

He leaned against the railing, looking out into the darkness.

It wasn’t the lie that unsettled him the most.

It was how close he had come to believing it completely.

To building a future around something that wasn’t real.

And yet…

he couldn’t ignore the fear behind it.

The blonde woman hadn’t lied for power.

She had lied because she was afraid of losing everything.

The thought lingered.

Uncomfortable.

May you like

Because it forced him to ask a harder question:

Had he made her feel like she had to?
