Chapter 12: What Comes Next

The music in the banquet hall began to slow, signaling the evening’s final stretch.
Guests were beginning to leave.
But at this table, no one had moved.
Because leaving would mean facing what came after.
The man stood first.
Not abruptly.
Not dramatically.
Just a quiet, deliberate movement.
“I need some air,” he said.
The blonde woman looked up at him, her eyes searching his face.
“For what it’s worth,” she said softly, “I never meant to hurt you.”
He paused.
Then nodded slightly.
“I believe you,” he said.
And somehow, that felt heavier than anger.
He turned to the girl.
“Stay here,” he told her gently.
She nodded.
Then he walked away—toward the exit, toward the night, toward whatever decisions waited beyond this room.
The woman in blue leaned back in her chair, her composure completely gone now.
“We thought we were protecting something,” she said quietly.
The blonde woman stared at the table.
“We were just delaying the truth.”
The girl looked at both of them.
Then at the pillow.
Then back at the empty space where the man had been.
She didn’t say anything this time.
Because even she could feel it.
Some truths don’t end a moment.
They begin something else.
May you like
And whatever came next—
none of them could pretend anymore.
