Chapter 10 - The House on Briar Lane.

Daniel did not go alone.
He let Vanessa believe he would.
Owen drove a second car and stopped two blocks from the address Vanessa sent.
Evelyn remained at Blackwood House with Lily.
Daniel made one thing clear before leaving.
"If anything feels wrong, I turn around."
Owen nodded.
"And you don't enter a room I haven't seen first."
The house on Briar Lane was small compared with Blackwood House.
Its porch light flickered above peeling white paint.
Daniel recognized Vanessa's car in the driveway.
He also recognized the black sedan parked half a block away.
It belonged to a security contractor Grant's law firm used.
Owen photographed the plate.
"We're not the only ones who know she's here."
Daniel called Vanessa from the sidewalk.
"I'm outside."
The front door opened a few inches.
Vanessa's face appeared.
"Where's your car?"
"Around the corner."
"Are you alone?"
Daniel looked toward Owen's darkened windshield.
"Yes."
Vanessa let him inside.
The living room was nearly empty.
A lamp stood on the floor beside two cardboard boxes.
Lily's stuffed rabbit sat on a chair.
Daniel picked it up immediately.
"Why do you have this?"
"I took it yesterday because Lily left it in my room."
"You used it to get me here."
"You wouldn't have come otherwise."
Daniel looked at her.
"Try the truth."
Vanessa's polished confidence was gone.
She paced once and stopped.
"Grant is going to blame everything on me."
"You gave him plenty to use."
"You think I don't know that?"
Her voice broke for the first time, but Daniel did not confuse fear with innocence.
"Where is the amendment?"
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
"I don't have the original."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Then we're done."
"Wait."
She pulled a photograph from her pocket.
It showed Grant standing beside a bank safe-deposit box two years earlier.
On the table beside him was a padded envelope bearing Claire's name.
Daniel took the photograph.
"Where did this come from?"
"Grant's private files."
"Why were you in his private files?"
Vanessa laughed without humor.
"Because I finally realized he was never going to give me what he promised."
Daniel said nothing.
Vanessa continued.
Grant had approached her almost a year earlier through a business contact.
He knew Daniel had met her at charity events.
He encouraged the relationship.
He fed her personal details about Daniel's grief, routines, and vulnerabilities.
At first, Vanessa claimed, she believed Grant only wanted influence over Mercer Logistics.
Then the plan became more specific.
Marriage would give Vanessa credibility inside the home.
Small conflicts would create a record.
A staged confrontation would create video.
A temporary proxy transfer would put Grant in control of the trust vote.
North Row Capital would then purchase a strategic block of company shares.
Vanessa would receive a consulting payment and a private settlement.
Daniel looked at her with disbelief.
"You agreed to use my daughter to create a scene."
Vanessa's eyes dropped.
"I agreed to a spill and an argument."
"Lily was crying."
"I know."
"Her hands hurt."
"I know."
"And you kept eating."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"I know."
Daniel's anger rose, but he kept his voice quiet.
"You don't get to make that smaller because Grant was worse."
Vanessa nodded once.
"I'm not asking you to."
She handed him a flash drive.
"I'm asking you to stop him."
Daniel did not take it immediately.
"What's on it?"
"North Row correspondence."
"And a scan of the envelope Grant took from Blackwood House."
Daniel accepted the drive.
A car door slammed outside.
Vanessa went still.
"He found me."
Daniel looked through the curtain.
The black sedan was now parked directly across the street.
A man stepped onto the sidewalk and spoke into his phone.
Owen texted Daniel immediately.
LEAVE THROUGH BACK.
Daniel turned to Vanessa.
"Come with me."
She shook her head.
"If I leave with you, Grant knows I gave you something."
Daniel stared at her.
"He already knows."
The front doorbell rang.
Vanessa flinched.
Daniel moved toward the kitchen.
"Back door."
They exited into a narrow yard and crossed through an unlocked side gate.
Owen met them in the alley with the car moving slowly.
Vanessa got in without arguing.
As they pulled away, Daniel inserted the flash drive into an isolated laptop Owen kept in the vehicle.
The first folder contained North Row emails.
The second contained scanned legal documents.
The third contained a video file dated eleven months earlier.
Daniel opened it.
Grant sat in a restaurant booth across from someone whose face was initially hidden.
Then the person leaned forward.
Daniel recognized him instantly.
It was Richard Mercer, Daniel's uncle and the second-largest individual shareholder in Mercer Logistics.
Richard had spent ten years insisting he wanted nothing to do with company politics.
On the recording, Grant slid a document across the table.
Richard smiled.
"Once Daniel loses the proxy, we're finally done waiting."
Daniel stared at the screen.
May you like
Grant was not trying to sell the company to an outsider.
He was helping a Mercer take it from another Mercer.
