Chapter 4 - The Paperwork That Came Too Early.

Grant Holloway entered Blackwood House wearing a navy overcoat and the expression of a man arriving to contain a crisis.

He was fifty-two, silver at the temples, careful in every gesture, and famous for making unpleasant things sound reasonable.

Daniel met him in the morning room.

Vanessa appeared two minutes later wearing a cream sweater and no makeup.

She looked fragile enough to invite sympathy.

Daniel noticed the performance immediately.

Grant placed the leather folder on the table.

"I came because Vanessa called me twice during the night."

Daniel remained standing.

"You said she called once."

Grant blinked.

"I may have misspoken."

"At one in the morning?"

"It was late."

Daniel nodded toward the folder.

"What is that?"

Grant rested a hand on it.

"Precautionary paperwork."

"Prepared when?"

"Daniel, this doesn't need to become adversarial."

"Prepared when?"

Grant slowly opened the folder.

Inside was a letter recommending a temporary independent review of Lily's home environment.

There was also a draft agreement transferring Daniel's voting authority over Lily's trust to the successor trustee for ninety days.

Daniel read the first page twice.

The letter was dated yesterday.

Hours before the dinner.

He looked up.

"You prepared this before anything happened."

Vanessa quickly spoke.

"Because I called him earlier."

Daniel turned to her.

"About what?"

"About your temper."

The answer was designed to provoke him.

Daniel understood that now.

He put the letter down carefully.

"What temper?"

Vanessa's eyes glistened.

"You get intense."

"That is not an example."

"You slam doors."

"When?"

"You raise your voice."

"When?"

Vanessa looked at Grant.

Grant stepped in smoothly.

"This isn't a deposition."

Daniel finally sat.

"No."

"It's my house."

"So let's stop pretending this paperwork is about Lily's safety."

Grant's expression cooled.

"Be careful."

Daniel smiled without warmth.

"There it is again."

He slid the temporary proxy agreement across the table.

"If I sign this, who gets control of the trust vote?"

Grant did not answer immediately.

Daniel already knew.

"You do."

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"Only temporarily."

Daniel looked at her.

"How do you know?"

She realized the mistake too late.

Grant closed the folder.

"Everyone needs time to calm down."

Daniel stood.

"Then you can both leave."

Vanessa stared at him.

"You're throwing me out?"

"I'm asking you to stay at a hotel until I understand what happened here."

"This is my home too."

"No."

Daniel's voice remained quiet.

"It isn't."

Vanessa's face hardened.

For one instant, the frightened woman disappeared and something colder replaced her.

"You think putting me outside makes the problem disappear?"

Daniel said nothing.

Grant collected the papers.

"Daniel, don't turn one emotional night into a legal disaster."

"You brought legal papers to breakfast."

Grant looked at him for a long moment.

Then he and Vanessa left together.

Owen entered from the adjoining room.

He had heard every word.

"That was convenient."

Daniel nodded.

"Too convenient."

They took photographs of every page before Grant carried the folder away.

Owen enlarged the metadata line printed at the bottom of the draft.

The document template number corresponded to Grant's firm.

More important, the revision code showed it had been created three days earlier.

Daniel felt his stomach turn.

Three days before Lily was ordered to clean the dining-room floor.

Three days before the hidden camera captured Daniel entering in anger.

This was not a response to a crisis.

It was preparation for one.

Daniel called Claire's older sister, Evelyn Shaw.

They had not spoken properly in almost a year.

Grief had made both of them stubborn, and distance had done the rest.

Evelyn answered cautiously.

"Daniel?"

"I need to ask you something about Lily's trust."

The silence on the line changed.

"What happened?"

"Do you know who the successor trustee is?"

"Grant."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Are you sure?"

"That's what he told me after Claire died."

Daniel opened his eyes again.

"Did Claire ever discuss changing it?"

Evelyn was quiet.

"Yes."

Daniel stood completely still.

"When?"

"About a month before she died."

He gripped the phone.

"What did she say?"

Evelyn exhaled slowly.

"She said she had started noticing things about Grant that bothered her."

"What things?"

"She wouldn't tell me over the phone."

Daniel looked toward the dark dining room.

"Did she change the trust?"

"I don't know."

Then Evelyn said something that made him forget the room around him.

"But she gave me an envelope and told me not to open it unless Grant ever tried to take control of Lily's shares."

Daniel's voice dropped.

"Do you still have it?"

Evelyn paused.

"I did."

Daniel's pulse quickened.

"What does that mean?"

May you like

"It means someone broke into my office last month."

"The envelope was the only thing missing."
