Chapter 12 - The Night the House Went Dark.

At 7:41 p.m., a summer storm rolled over Blackwood House.
Thunder shook the windows.
Lily sat on the floor of the upstairs family room building a crooked tower from wooden blocks while Evelyn read beside her.
Daniel had just finished sending Rachel the latest files when every light in the house went out.
The backup generator should have started within five seconds.
It did not.
Owen's voice came through Daniel's phone.
"Stay where you are."
Daniel looked toward Lily.
She had frozen beside her blocks.
"Daddy?"
"I'm right here."
He turned on his phone flashlight.
"It's just the lights, sweetheart."
Lily reached for him.
Daniel lifted her and carried her to Evelyn.
Owen appeared at the door thirty seconds later with two security staff members.
"The generator was manually disabled."
Daniel looked at him.
"From where?"
"The basement panel."
"And the gate?"
"Offline."
The house was not simply dark.
Its security had been deliberately interrupted.
Owen moved Lily and Evelyn into the upstairs safe room, a reinforced space Daniel had always considered excessive.
That night, he was grateful it existed.
Vanessa remained downstairs with Rachel, who had arrived to prepare for the board meeting.
Daniel wanted Vanessa inside the safe room too.
Evelyn objected.
"You trust her now?"
"No."
Daniel looked toward Lily.
"But I'm not leaving anyone exposed because they're useful to me."
Vanessa heard him.
Her face tightened with shame.
She entered the safe room without speaking.
Daniel and Owen went downstairs.
Emergency lights glowed faintly along the floor.
The old house sounded different without electricity.
Every pipe and footstep seemed louder.
They reached Claire's study.
The door was open.
Daniel knew he had locked it.
Inside, drawers had been pulled out.
The archive boxes from the hidden room had been disturbed.
Someone had gone directly to the evidence.
Owen pointed toward the west hallway.
A faint beam of light moved across the wall.
They followed it.
A man stood near the cellar stairs holding a phone flashlight.
Daniel recognized Grant before Grant turned around.
For one surreal moment, both men simply stared at each other.
Grant wore a raincoat darkened by water.
His polished lawyer's calm had finally vanished.
"How did you get in?" Daniel asked.
Grant looked toward Owen.
"I still represent the trust."
"That isn't an answer."
Grant raised a document folder.
"I came to secure trust property after learning confidential records had been removed."
Owen spoke quietly.
"During a power failure you caused?"
Grant's face changed.
"I did not cause this."
Daniel stepped closer but kept several feet between them.
"Then why is your security contractor's access card in the basement reader?"
Owen held up a phone displaying the access log.
The card had been used at 7:39 p.m.
Grant looked at the screen.
For the first time, genuine uncertainty crossed his face.
"That's impossible."
A sound came from the far end of the corridor.
Someone ran.
Owen's security staff moved toward it.
A back service door slammed.
Grant turned his head sharply.
Daniel studied him.
"You weren't alone."
Grant said nothing.
Owen received a message from the exterior team.
They had found the black sedan near the garden wall.
The driver had fled on foot into the rain.
Inside the vehicle was a portable device configured to interfere with the home's backup-control network.
Grant's name was not on it.
Richard Mercer's private security company was.
Grant sat down heavily on the cellar step.
For the first time, he looked less like a mastermind than a man who had discovered he was disposable.
Daniel almost laughed at the symmetry.
Grant had built a plan around making Daniel look out of control.
Richard had apparently built a backup plan around making Grant take the fall.
"What did Richard promise you?" Daniel asked.
Grant looked up.
"You don't understand."
"Then explain it."
Grant's voice dropped.
"He has the original amendment."
Daniel went still.
"How?"
Grant swallowed.
"I took Claire's envelope after it was delivered."
Evelyn's voice came from behind them.
She had left the safe room after the generator restarted.
"You stole it from her house?"
Grant shook his head.
"No."
"I took it from Blackwood House."
He looked at Daniel.
"But when I opened the bank box six months later, the envelope was empty."
Daniel frowned.
"Then what was in the photograph?"
"A decoy."
Grant's eyes moved toward the silver snail charm hanging from a chain around Evelyn's neck.

"Claire knew I would take it."
"She wanted me to."
