Chapter 5 - The Story That Would Not Match.

By noon, Blackwood House no longer felt like a home.

It felt like a scene everyone had entered with a different script.

Daniel moved Lily into the bright guest suite beside his bedroom and asked Owen to restrict access to the property.

Only Dr. Keller, Evelyn, and essential staff were allowed through the gate.

Vanessa's access codes were disabled.

Grant's were removed entirely.

Daniel expected a furious call.

Instead, he received an email from Grant's office confirming an appointment with a child-welfare consultant at three o'clock.

Daniel stared at the message.

He had never requested one.

Owen read over his shoulder.

"He scheduled this before you told him to leave."

Daniel checked the email header.

The appointment had been created at 6:03 that morning.

The dinner incident had occurred around 6:50 the previous evening.

The timeline was tightening around them.

Evelyn arrived shortly after one.

She was forty-three, direct, sharp-eyed, and less interested in politeness than truth.

She hugged Lily first.

Then she looked at Daniel.

"You look terrible."

"Good to see you too."

"I'm serious."

"So am I."

The old tension between them lasted ten seconds.

Then Lily held up the silver snail.

Evelyn froze.

"Where did you get that?"

Daniel noticed her reaction.

"Marta gave it to Lily."

Evelyn took the charm carefully.

"Claire had one exactly like this."

Daniel stared at her.

"Claire?"

"When we were kids, our grandmother called us her little snails because we carried blankets everywhere."

Evelyn turned the charm over.

"Claire gave me mine when she got married."

Daniel had never heard the story.

Lily touched the spiral.

"Marta said it keeps secrets."

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

"Apparently it does."

At three, the consultant arrived with a woman Daniel recognized from Grant's firm.

Her name was Melissa Crane, and she introduced herself as an independent family specialist.

Evelyn asked a simple question.

"Who is paying you?"

Melissa hesitated.

"The Holloway Foundation is covering the initial consultation."

Daniel almost smiled.

Independent had lasted twelve seconds.

He nevertheless allowed the interview because refusing it could be misrepresented later.

He insisted that Evelyn remain present.

Melissa asked about Daniel's work hours, grief after Claire's death, childcare arrangements, and his argument with Vanessa.

Daniel answered calmly.

Then Melissa asked Lily why she had been cleaning the floor.

Lily sat on a small chair holding her stuffed rabbit.

"Because I made red."

"And who told you to clean it?"

"Vanessa."

"Did Vanessa say anything else?"

Lily nodded.

"She said Daddy gets mad when houses are messy."

Daniel's chest tightened.

He had never said anything like that to Lily.

Melissa glanced at him.

"Does Daddy get mad?"

Lily thought hard.

"Daddy gets loud on phone sometimes."

Daniel almost laughed because it was painfully accurate.

Lily continued.

"But not at me."

Melissa asked about Marta.

Lily looked down.

"Vanessa said Marta went away because she lied."

Daniel and Evelyn exchanged a glance.

That was new.

"What did Marta lie about?" Melissa asked.

Lily squeezed the rabbit.

"The little eye."

Melissa frowned.

"What little eye?"

Daniel did not answer for Lily.

He wanted the child to speak in her own way.

Lily pointed toward the hallway.

"The clock eye."

Melissa stopped writing.

For the first time, she looked less like someone following a prepared checklist.

Owen entered quietly and handed Daniel a printed page.

It was a service record for the dining-room clock.

A technician from a private surveillance company had visited Blackwood House four days earlier.

The appointment had been authorized by Vanessa.

The billing contact was not Vanessa.

It was Holloway Legal Group.

Daniel passed the page to Evelyn.

She read it twice.

Melissa's face changed.

"I was not told about this."

Daniel looked at her.

"What were you told?"

She hesitated.

"That Mr. Holloway was concerned a volatile confrontation might occur."

Daniel's pulse steadied instead of racing.

"Before it occurred?"

Melissa looked down at her notes.

"Yes."

Evelyn leaned forward.

"How far before?"

Melissa swallowed.

"He contacted me five days ago."

The room went silent.

Five days ago, Lily had not spilled the berry sauce.

Five days ago, no hidden camera had captured Daniel entering the dining room.

Five days ago, Grant Holloway had already expected a volatile confrontation.

Daniel looked at the silver snail in Lily's hand.

The incident had not been predicted.

May you like

It had been scheduled.

And someone still had not explained why Marta disappeared on the morning it was supposed to happen.
