Chapter 7 - The Woman at the Gate.

At 6:20 the next morning, the gatehouse called Daniel's private line.

The guard sounded uncertain.

"Mr. Mercer, there's a woman outside who refuses to give her name."

Daniel was already awake.

"What does she want?"

"She says to tell you the snail is slow, but it always gets home."

Daniel was out of bed before the guard finished speaking.

He found Marta Alvarez standing beyond the iron gate in a gray raincoat with a small overnight bag at her feet.

She looked exhausted.

When the gate opened, she did not step inside immediately.

"Is Vanessa here?"

"No."

"Grant?"

"No."

Only then did she enter.

Lily saw her from the foyer and ran across the marble in her socks.

"Marta!"

Marta dropped to her knees and caught the little girl in both arms.

Her composure broke for the first time.

"Oh, sweetheart."

"You came back."

"I promised I would."

Daniel gave them a moment before leading Marta into the morning room.

Evelyn and Owen joined them.

Marta kept her hands around a cup of tea without drinking it.

"I did not quit," she said.

Daniel nodded.

"I know."

"Vanessa told me Mr. Holloway wanted the dining room empty at six."

"Why?"

"She said there would be a private conversation and no staff should interrupt."

Marta looked down.

"Then I saw the camera technician."

She had questioned him because house security changes normally required Owen's approval.

The technician showed her an authorization bearing Grant's office seal and Vanessa's signature.

Later that day, Marta overheard Vanessa practicing lines in the dining room.

"What lines?" Evelyn asked.

Marta's voice became quiet.

"Things like, 'Daniel, calm down,' and, 'You're frightening me.'"

Daniel's hands went cold.

Marta continued.

"At first I thought she was preparing for an argument."

"Then Grant arrived through the service entrance."

"He told her the camera needed a clean angle on the doorway."

Owen leaned forward.

"You heard him say that?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't you call me?"

Marta looked ashamed.

"I tried."

She explained that her phone stopped connecting to the network minutes later.

When she went upstairs to use the landline, Vanessa confronted her.

Vanessa accused Marta of stealing household items and ordered her to leave immediately.

"I knew the accusation was false," Marta said.

"But I also knew arguing would warn them I understood more than they thought."

She pretended to leave through the staff corridor.

Instead, she hid the prepaid phone in her room, left the snail charm with Lily, and exited through the garden delivery gate that did not register personal vehicles.

"Where have you been?" Daniel asked.

"With my sister."

"Why didn't you contact me?"

"Because Mr. Holloway sent someone to her apartment yesterday."

Daniel stared at her.

"Who?"

"A man who said he was investigating missing property from Blackwood House."

Marta finally took a sip of tea.

"I realized they were trying to make me look unreliable before I could speak."

Evelyn's expression hardened.

"Did you take anything else from the house?"

Marta looked at Lily's silver snail.

"One thing."

She removed a brass key from the lining of her bag.

It matched the old wine-cellar safe beneath the west wing.

Daniel had forgotten the safe existed.

Claire had used it for private records when she served on the family foundation board.

"Why this key?"

Marta looked at him.

"Mrs. Mercer gave it to me three weeks before she died."

Daniel stopped moving.

"Claire gave you that?"

"She told me if Mr. Holloway ever became too interested in Lily's trust, I should make sure you opened the safe."

Evelyn closed her eyes briefly.

Claire had been leaving warnings in pieces.

Daniel asked the question he was afraid to hear answered.

"Why didn't you tell me two years ago?"

Marta's eyes filled with regret.

"Because after she died, you could barely walk into this room without falling apart."

"And Grant told me the trust matter had been settled."

Daniel looked away.

Grant had used grief as a locked door.

Marta reached across the table.

"I should have told you."

"I'm sorry."

Daniel shook his head.

"We're done apologizing for what he counted on."

They went to the west cellar together.

The safe was hidden behind a rack of dusty wine bottles.

The brass key opened the outer panel.

Inside was a second lock requiring a six-digit code.

Daniel tried Claire's birthday.

Wrong.

He tried Lily's birthday.

Wrong.

Evelyn looked at the silver snail.

"What did Grandma always say?"

Daniel looked at her.

Evelyn smiled faintly.

"Slow gets home."

Marta whispered six numbers.

The date Claire and Daniel had first brought Lily home.

The safe opened.

Inside were three folders and a small digital recorder.

Daniel reached for the recorder.

Before he could press play, Owen's phone buzzed.

He checked the screen.

"The board meeting was moved up."

Daniel frowned.

"To when?"

Owen looked at him.

"Twenty minutes from now."

May you like

Grant was no longer waiting for Daniel to react.

He was racing the evidence.
