Chapter 9 - The Dinner Was Rehearsed.

Owen spent the afternoon rebuilding the hidden camera's deleted buffer.
He worked from a cloned storage chip because Daniel refused to risk damaging the original.
At 4:12 p.m., he called everyone into the security room.
"I found the missing sections."
Daniel stood behind him with Evelyn and Marta.
Lily was upstairs with Dr. Keller's recommended caregiver, safely away from the conversation.
Owen opened the first recovered clip.
The dining room appeared empty.
Then Vanessa entered carrying the silver bowl of berry sauce.
She placed it near the edge of the table.
She looked toward the hidden camera.
Then she moved the bowl two inches closer to Lily's usual seat.
Daniel felt his stomach turn.
The next clip showed Vanessa sending the evening nanny home early.
The nanny looked confused but obeyed.
Another clip showed Lily wandering into the room with her stuffed rabbit.
Vanessa called her over.
There was no audio, but the child's body language was clear.
Lily reached for something on the table.
Vanessa shifted the berry bowl.
It tipped.
Red sauce spread across the white marble.
Lily jumped back.
Vanessa did not.
She looked at the clock.
Then she looked at her watch.
The next recovered segment began twelve minutes later.
Lily was already kneeling.
The industrial cleaner sat beside her.
Vanessa paced between the table and doorway.
Twice she checked her phone.
Once she practiced a frightened expression toward the clock lens and then dropped it immediately.
Evelyn whispered, "My God."
Daniel said nothing.
The final restored clip showed Vanessa hearing Daniel's car in the driveway.
She sat down.
She placed a fork in her hand.
She took one calm bite.
Then the doors opened.
Owen paused the footage.
"The dinner wasn't spontaneous."
Daniel stared at Vanessa's frozen face on the screen.
"It was rehearsed."
Marta nodded slowly.
"That is what I heard."
They still had a problem.
The recovered video had no audio from the missing segments.
Grant could argue that the images were being misinterpreted.
Vanessa could claim she had moved the bowl accidentally and asked Lily to wipe a harmless spill.
Daniel needed the words.
Lily had heard them.
But Daniel would not turn his child into the centerpiece of an adult legal battle if he could avoid it.
Evelyn picked up the silver snail charm.
"Marta, when you gave this to Lily, was the note already inside?"
"Yes."
"Anything else?"
Marta hesitated.
"There was a memory card."
Daniel looked at her.
"Where?"
"Inside the spiral."
Owen immediately took the charm.
He had opened it the night before but had only removed the folded note.
Now he examined the inner shell beneath magnification.
A tiny panel shifted under pressure.
Behind it sat a microSD card no larger than a fingernail.
Marta exhaled.
"I recorded Grant and Vanessa on my phone."
"When I realized they might search me, I copied the file to that card."
Owen inserted it into an offline reader.
One audio file appeared.
The recording began with clinking glass and distant footsteps.
Then Grant's voice came through clearly.
"You don't need him to touch you."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
Vanessa answered.
"Then what do you need?"
"A reaction that looks uncontrolled."
"The board already worries he's stretched too thin."
Grant continued.
"If he storms in and grabs you, the image does the work."
Evelyn looked sick.
Vanessa's voice returned.
"And the girl?"
A pause followed.
"Keep it minor."
"Nothing that creates a real medical issue."
Daniel's fingers curled against the desk.
Grant spoke again.
"The point is not the child."
"The point is Daniel."
The recording crackled.
Then Vanessa laughed softly.
"And once you're trustee?"
"We call the board."
"North Row makes its offer."
"You get what we discussed."
Vanessa's tone became colder.
"I want it in writing."
Grant answered.
"After the vote."
The file ended.
No one spoke for several seconds.
Daniel felt no satisfaction.
Proof did not erase the image of Lily on the floor.
It only proved adults had placed her there for leverage.
Owen copied the file to three encrypted drives.
Evelyn called an independent attorney she trusted.
Daniel called the board chairwoman.
Before he could send the recording, his phone lit with a message from Vanessa.
It contained a photograph of Lily's blue stuffed rabbit lying on the front steps of an unfamiliar house.
Beneath it was one sentence.
YOU DON'T KNOW WHO GRANT IS REALLY WORKING FOR.
A second message arrived.
COME ALONE IF YOU WANT THE ORIGINAL TRUST AMENDMENT.
Daniel stared at the screen.
May you like
Vanessa had just admitted she knew where Claire's missing document was.
And she was suddenly afraid of the man she had helped.
