Chapter 6 - The Locked Study.

Daniel did not sleep that night.

He sat at the desk in Claire's old study with the trust documents spread beneath a green-shaded lamp.

Most of the paperwork was familiar.

Signatures.

Corporate resolutions.

Insurance schedules.

Language written to sound permanent even when people were not.

One document kept pulling his attention back.

It was a copy of the trust amendment Grant had filed after Claire's death.

The amendment named Grant Holloway as successor trustee if Daniel could no longer serve.

Daniel had seen it before.

He had never questioned it.

Now he studied Claire's signature until the ink seemed to move.

Evelyn stood behind him.

"That doesn't look like hers."

Daniel looked up.

"You're sure?"

"Claire wrote her C differently when she was signing legal documents."

Evelyn reached for a framed photograph on the shelf.

The back contained Claire's handwritten dedication from years earlier.

The first letter in her name curved inward.

The signature on Grant's amendment curved out.

It was a tiny difference.

It was also enough to make Daniel's stomach tighten.

Owen entered with a ring of old house keys.

"We found something else."

He held up a brass key stamped S-3.

"It was in Marta's room."

Daniel knew the code.

S-3 belonged to the small document room behind Claire's study.

The door had not been opened in years.

Daniel crossed the room and tried the key.

The lock clicked.

Dust floated through the beam of Owen's flashlight.

Inside were archive boxes, old photo albums, and a narrow writing desk covered by a linen sheet.

Evelyn pulled the sheet away.

A stack of paper rested beneath it.

Daniel expected letters.

Instead, he found pages covered with repeated versions of his own signature.

Some were crude.

Others were frighteningly close.

Below them were copies of Claire's signature.

Evelyn whispered one word.

"Practice."

Daniel felt heat rise behind his eyes.

Someone had been using a forgotten room inside his own house to practice forging the names of two people who controlled Lily's future.

Owen photographed everything before touching another page.

At the bottom of the stack lay a draft stock-purchase agreement.

Mercer Logistics shares were to be sold to a private investment group called North Row Capital.

The agreement assumed that the successor trustee controlled Lily's voting rights.

The proposed sale price was far below the company's current valuation.

Daniel read the initials beside the revision marks.

G.H.

Grant Holloway.

Another set of initials appeared beside several financial terms.

V.R.

Vanessa Reed.

Evelyn stared at them.

"She wasn't just helping him."

"She was negotiating."

Daniel turned the page.

A handwritten note in the margin read: AFTER INCIDENT, MOVE FAST BEFORE BOARD REACTS.

He photographed it himself.

Then the study door opened behind them.

Vanessa stood there.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

She was wearing a camel coat over dark trousers and had apparently entered through the side service door before Owen's new access restrictions fully propagated.

Owen moved between her and the desk.

"You're not authorized to be here."

Vanessa ignored him and looked at the papers.

Her face gave away nothing at first.

Then she exhaled.

"You found the drafts."

Daniel stared at her.

"You knew they were here."

"I knew Grant kept papers in this room."

"In my wife's study."

"Your late wife's study has been unused for two years."

Evelyn stepped forward.

"That doesn't make it yours."

Vanessa looked at her with open dislike.

"Of course you're here."

Daniel held up the stock agreement.

"Explain your initials."

Vanessa looked at the page.

"Grant asked me to review numbers."

"Why?"

"Because I worked in private equity before I met you."

"Why were you reviewing the sale of shares you don't own?"

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

"Because Grant said the company was vulnerable."

"To what?"

She looked directly at Daniel.

"To you."

The answer was so calm that it chilled him.

"He said grief had made you unpredictable."

"And you believed him?"

"I believed what I saw."

Daniel pointed toward the dining room beyond the wall.

"Did you see a father you could provoke on camera?"

Vanessa's expression changed.

"You think you're being clever."

"I think five days before the dinner, Grant hired a consultant because he expected me to lose control."

Vanessa took a slow breath.

"Then maybe he knows you better than you know yourself."

Owen shifted forward, but Daniel raised a hand.

He would not give her the reaction she wanted.

Vanessa noticed.

A faint smile touched her mouth.

"There it is."

"What?"

"You finally understand."

She stepped closer to the desk.

"One angry moment, Daniel."

"That's all anyone needed."

Evelyn stared at her.

"Anyone?"

Vanessa's smile vanished.

She had said too much.

Daniel did not move.

"Who else is involved?"

Vanessa looked from him to Evelyn and then to Owen.

"You should ask Grant what he promised the board."

Daniel's phone rang before he could answer.

It was his chief financial officer.

Daniel picked up.

"What happened?"

The CFO spoke quickly.

A special board meeting had been requested for nine the next morning.

The agenda contained one item.

Temporary suspension of Daniel Mercer's voting authority pending a family-safety review.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

May you like

She was no longer smiling.

The plan was moving forward without waiting for her.
