Chapter 3 - The Silver Snail.

Daniel locked the library door after Vanessa left.

He did not argue with her again that night.

He did not need to.

The fear on her face when Lily revealed the silver snail had told him more than another hour of denials could have.

Lily sat curled against him on the sofa while Owen examined the charm beneath a desk lamp.

It looked ordinary at first.

The shell was no larger than Daniel's thumbnail and decorated with a simple spiral.

A tiny clasp on the back suggested it had once been attached to a bracelet.

"Marta wore this," Lily said.

"On her sweater."

Daniel remembered it now.

Marta had a habit of wearing small silver pins on cardigans.

He had seen the snail dozens of times and never thought about it.

Owen turned the charm carefully.

"There's a seam."

Daniel watched him press a point on the spiral.

The shell opened.

Inside was a tiny folded strip of paper.

Three words were written in Marta's careful handwriting.

DON'T TRUST TIMESTAMPS.

Daniel felt a cold weight settle in his chest.

Owen unfolded the paper further.

There was a second line.

ASK ABOUT GRANT.

Daniel knew only one Grant.

Grant Holloway had been his family's attorney for eleven years.

He had handled Claire's estate after her death.

He sat on the advisory board of Lily's trust.

He had also introduced Daniel to Vanessa at a charity dinner eight months earlier.

Daniel stared at the note.

"Call him."

Owen hesitated.

"Now?"

"Now."

Grant answered on the third ring with the smooth, alert voice of a man who never sounded surprised.

"Daniel, it's after one."

"I know."

"Is Lily all right?"

Daniel looked at Owen.

He had not told Grant about Lily.

"Why are you asking about her?"

Silence lasted less than a second.

"Vanessa called me."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"When?"

"Maybe an hour ago."

"What did she say?"

Grant sighed.

"She said there was an upsetting family incident and that you were angry."

"Did she tell you about the camera?"

Another small pause.

"What camera?"

Daniel studied the silver snail.

"Never mind."

Grant's tone changed.

"Daniel, if emotions are high, you need to be careful."

"Careful about what?"

"About how things look."

Daniel almost laughed.

"That's an interesting choice of words."

"You're a public figure."

"I'm a father in my own house."

"You're also the voting proxy for a trust that holds forty-one percent of Mercer Logistics."

There it was.

Grant had moved from family concern to corporate control in less than a minute.

Daniel kept his voice level.

"Good night, Grant."

"Daniel, wait."

He ended the call.

Owen folded his arms.

"He knew too much."

"He also wanted me thinking about the trust."

Daniel looked down at Lily.

She had fallen asleep again, her head against his chest.

The trust had been created by Daniel's father years earlier and expanded by Claire after Lily was born.

Daniel could vote the shares on Lily's behalf until she became an adult.

If he were legally declared unable to serve, the proxy would pass to a successor trustee.

Daniel had always assumed the successor was Grant because Grant managed the paperwork.

He had never considered what that meant in practice.

"Get me the trust documents," Daniel said.

Owen opened a secure server.

"We have scanned copies."

Daniel shook his head.

"Originals."

Owen looked toward the hall.

"Those are in Grant's office."

Daniel felt another piece click into place.

At seven the next morning, he went to Marta's room.

The bed was made with military precision.

The closet was empty.

The drawers had been wiped clean.

It looked less like someone had moved out and more like someone had erased a person.

Daniel opened the wastebasket.

Nothing.

He checked beneath the mattress.

Nothing.

Then he noticed a faint scratch beneath the bedside table.

One floorboard was slightly raised.

Owen pried it up.

Inside was a prepaid phone wrapped in a dish towel.

The battery was dead.

They carried it to the security office and charged it.

There were no contacts.

There was only one saved voice message.

Marta's voice filled the room.

"Mr. Mercer, if you hear this, please don't confront anyone until you know why they need you angry."

Daniel's skin prickled.

The message continued.

"The dinner is not the plan."

"Your reaction is the plan."

Then a door slammed somewhere in Marta's recording.

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"If they ask you to sign anything, don't."

The message ended.

Owen looked at Daniel.

"Who are they?"

Daniel looked toward the locked library where Vanessa had spent the night.

"We're going to find out."

At that exact moment, the front gate called the house line.

Owen answered.

His expression changed.

"Mr. Mercer, Grant Holloway is here."

Daniel checked the time.

It was 7:38 a.m.

Grant had arrived before Daniel's own office staff had started work.

And according to the guard, he was carrying a leather folder marked FAMILY COURT.
