Chapter 14 - The Last Signature.
The emergency board meeting began at nine the next morning.
This time Daniel did not join alone.
Rachel sat beside him.
Evelyn sat on his other side holding a certified copy of Claire's trust amendment retrieved at dawn from the independent records custodian.
Owen had prepared a secure evidence package.
Marta waited with Lily in another part of the house.
Vanessa chose to participate from a separate room with her own attorney.
Grant joined from Rachel's office conference room after agreeing to cooperate with an independent investigation.
Richard Mercer appeared on the screen wearing the same calm expression he had worn at every holiday dinner Daniel could remember.
The chairwoman opened the meeting.
"We are here to determine whether any temporary change in voting authority is necessary."
Richard spoke immediately.
"Given Daniel's recent behavior, the answer is obvious."
Daniel almost smiled.
The old script had not changed.
Only the audience had more pages now.
Rachel began with the original trust amendment.
The certified document named Evelyn Shaw as successor trustee.
It had been executed before Claire's death and independently stored.
Grant's supposed successor authority was therefore unsupported.
Richard's expression remained still.
"That document requires authentication."
Rachel nodded.
"It has been authenticated."
She displayed the custodian's records, witness signatures, and deposit log.
Then she displayed the electronic filing that later named Grant.
Daniel's digital signature on that filing did not match the system token he used at the time.
Server records showed Grant's office had accessed Daniel's signature credentials while Daniel was overseas.
One board member removed his glasses and rubbed his forehead.
Rachel moved to the hidden camera.
She played the restored footage from the dining room.
Everyone watched Vanessa position the berry bowl.
Everyone watched the nanny leave.
Everyone watched Lily kneel on the floor.
Everyone watched Vanessa check the clock lens before Daniel arrived.
Then Rachel played the audio from Marta's microSD card.
Grant's voice filled the meeting.
"You don't need him to touch you."
"A reaction that looks uncontrolled."
Richard's face finally changed.
He looked toward Grant's video window.
Grant did not look back.
Rachel played the older audio recorded by Claire.
Richard's own voice followed.
"If she replaces you, fix it after she's gone."
The meeting went silent.
Richard leaned toward his camera.
"That recording is incomplete and unlawfully obtained."
Rachel responded calmly.
"Those questions can be addressed in the proper forum."
"For this board, the immediate issue is whether Daniel's proxy authority should be suspended based on a confrontation that appears to have been deliberately engineered."
The chairwoman nodded.
The answer was no.
The motion to suspend Daniel was withdrawn.
A second motion followed.
The board opened an independent investigation into Grant's filings, Richard's related-party transactions, and North Row Capital.
Richard objected.
No one supported him.
Then Vanessa requested to speak.
Her face appeared on the screen.
She looked exhausted and older than she had two days earlier.
"I participated in the dinner setup."
Daniel stared at her.
She continued.
"Grant told me the objective was to create an argument that would support a temporary governance change."
"I moved the bowl."
"I sent the nanny away."
"I told Lily to clean the spill."
Vanessa paused.
"When she said her hands hurt, I should have stopped everything."
"I did not."
The admission was simple.
There was no excuse attached to it.
Daniel appreciated the difference without confusing it with forgiveness.
Vanessa then described Richard's financial promise and Grant's instructions.
Richard interrupted.
"She's lying to save herself."
Vanessa looked into the camera.
"Then explain your signature."
She held up a consulting agreement.
It promised her payment through a Richard-controlled entity after North Row acquired the distribution shares.
Richard stared at the page.
"That's not my signature."
Rachel asked for the document.
Vanessa sent the scan.
A forensic examiner retained overnight had already compared it with known samples.
The signature appeared authentic.
Richard's confidence finally cracked.
He looked toward Grant.
"You said that document was destroyed."
The words left his mouth before he could stop them.
No one needed to explain what he had just done.
The board chairwoman ended the meeting immediately and referred the evidence to independent counsel and the appropriate authorities.
Daniel closed his laptop.
He expected relief.
Instead, he felt exhausted.
Evelyn squeezed his shoulder.
"It's over."
Daniel looked at the silver snail on the table.
"Not yet."
There was still one question Claire had never answered.
Why had she distrusted Grant before Richard approached him?
Owen entered carrying a final sealed envelope from the records custodian.
It had been stored with the amendment but marked for Daniel personally.
