Chapter 11 - The Photograph in the Silver Frame.

Margaret looked at Simon with open disgust.

"You coward."

Simon smiled.

"That is not a denial."

Nolan moved to block the doorway.

Claire remained beside Adrian.

"Margaret," Adrian said.

His voice sounded smaller than he intended.

"Tell me he is lying."

Margaret looked at the old trophies on the shelf rather than at Adrian.

"I have lied to you enough tonight."

Adrian's chest tightened.

Simon spoke with almost cheerful cruelty.

"There it is."

Claire cut him off.

"You do not get to narrate this."

Simon looked amused.

"Still protective."

Claire's eyes sharpened.

"Of the truth, yes."

Margaret walked slowly toward an old silver photograph frame on Adrian's dresser.

It showed Lenora Vale with Evelyn and Adrian as children.

Margaret lifted the frame.

A second photograph had been hidden behind the first.

She handed it to Adrian.

The image showed Lenora standing beside a younger Margaret and a man Adrian did not recognize.

Claire recognized him immediately.

Her face lost its color.

"Daniel Hart."

Adrian looked at her.

"Your father?"

Claire nodded.

The room seemed to tilt around a single photograph.

Margaret finally met Claire's eyes.

"Your father helped Charles build Northstar."

Claire stared at her.

"My father died when I was twelve."

"You were told he died."

Claire's voice became dangerously quiet.

"Choose your next words carefully."

Margaret did.

"Daniel disappeared after he discovered someone was using Northstar to manipulate contracts, board votes, and private investigations."

Simon leaned against the doorframe.

"A very noble version of events."

Margaret ignored him.

"Lenora helped him vanish."

Claire looked at the photograph again.

"Why?"

"Because the person behind the network had threatened his family."

Claire's hand tightened around the picture.

Adrian remembered the strange signature in the ledger beside Claire's name.

"The recent entry."

Claire looked at him.

He pointed to the ledger.

"It says your arrival was approved, and it was signed like my father."

Margaret nodded slowly.

"Daniel knew Charles's signature better than anyone."

Claire stared at her.

"You think my father is alive."

Margaret's eyes filled with something that looked like regret.

"I know he was alive eleven months ago."

Claire took one step backward.

The calm housekeeper disappeared for a second, replaced by a daughter hearing an impossible sentence.

Adrian touched her arm.

Claire pulled away instinctively.

Simon watched with uncomfortable interest.

"This is touching," he said.

Nolan turned on him.

"One more word and you can enjoy the rest of the night in a locked pantry."

Simon raised his hands again.

Claire looked at Margaret.

"If my father approved my arrival, why did Evelyn ask me to come here?"

Margaret answered carefully.

"Because Evelyn found Daniel first."

Claire's eyes widened.

Margaret continued.

"She did not hire you by chance."

"She knew who I was."

"Yes."

Claire looked toward the window, fighting to process it.

Adrian realized Evelyn had built a chain of trust across two families before she died.

Simon broke the silence anyway.

"And now you understand why Victor is not the architect."

Claire turned.

"You know who is."

Simon smiled.

"I know the initials."

He pointed to the back of the hidden photograph.

Adrian flipped it over.

Three letters had been written in faded ink.

D.H.V.

Claire read them once.

Then she looked at Adrian.

"Daniel Hart Vale."

Adrian frowned.

"Vale?"

May you like

Margaret closed her eyes.

"That was the secret Lenora took to her grave."
