Chapter 4 - The Locked East Wing.

Adrian wanted to reject Claire's accusation immediately.
Instead, he saw Nolan's face change.
Not guilt.
Fear.
"Mrs. Davenport is upstairs," Nolan said.
Claire shook her head.
"She left the dinner room twenty minutes before the first window broke."
Adrian remembered it now.
Margaret had quietly excused herself after receiving what she called a kitchen problem.
She had managed Vale House for eighteen years.
She had helped bury Adrian's father.
She had stood beside Evelyn at every family holiday.
The idea that she could betray them felt absurd.
That made it dangerous.
Claire opened a narrow cabinet and took out a small emergency lantern.
"The east wing is the fastest path to your father's study."
Adrian looked at her.
"The study has been locked since he died."
"Not anymore."
They moved through another service corridor and climbed toward the east wing.
Claire left the rifle lowered and carried the lantern in her other hand.
The mansion above them had become strangely quiet.
No shouting.
No running.
Just distant movement and the low hum of the backup generator.
At the end of the passage, Claire stopped beside a narrow panel.
"Listen."
Adrian heard voices beyond the wall.
One belonged to a man he did not recognize.
The other belonged to Margaret Davenport.
"The study is empty," the man said.
Margaret answered in a tight whisper.
"Then he moved it before he died."
Adrian's stomach dropped.
Nolan stared at him.
Claire's expression stayed flat.
Margaret continued.
"Check the desk again."
The stranger replied.
"We already did."
"Victor said the ledger never left this house."
Adrian felt his pulse jump at the name.
Victor Sloane had been his father's closest business partner and was now Vale Meridian's chairman.
Victor had also been the man who stood beside Adrian through Evelyn's funeral.
Claire leaned toward the panel.
The stranger spoke again.
"What about the maid?"
Margaret paused.
"She is not what she says she is."
Adrian looked at Claire.
Claire did not blink.
"Victor noticed her months ago," Margaret continued.
"Then why did you leave her here?"
"Because we wanted to know what she was looking for."
Claire's jaw tightened.
For the first time, Adrian understood that Claire had not been the only person playing a role inside the mansion.
The stranger lowered his voice.
"We lost track of Vale and Reed."
Margaret answered immediately.
"Claire took them into the service passages."
Nolan mouthed a silent curse.
Adrian barely heard it.
He was staring at the wall as eighteen years of memories reorganized themselves around a single betrayal.
Claire touched his sleeve.
"We cannot stay here."
Adrian pulled away.
"Victor knew about you?"
"Apparently."
"Then this whole thing was a trap."
Claire's expression hardened.
"Not necessarily."
Nolan frowned.
"How is an armed group inside the mansion not a trap?"
"Because they are still searching."
Claire looked at Adrian.
"If Victor knew where the ledger was, they would already be gone."
That was the first piece of good news Adrian had heard all night.
It lasted three seconds.
A floorboard creaked behind the hidden panel.
Margaret's voice stopped.
Then she spoke much closer to the wall.
"Claire?"
Nobody moved.
Margaret tapped twice against the wood.
"I know you are there."
Adrian's eyes widened.
Claire raised one finger, warning him to remain silent.
Margaret gave a quiet, almost maternal sigh.
"You were always very good at disappearing."
Claire's face changed.
Adrian saw surprise.
Margaret spoke again.
"Evelyn said the same thing about you."
Claire looked as if someone had opened a door inside her past.
May you like
Then Margaret delivered the line that changed the direction of the entire night.
"She also said you would never forgive yourself for what happened in Boston."
