Chapter 13 - The Ledger Beneath the Glass.

The greenhouse stood behind Vale House like a dark crystal box.

Rain tapped against its glass roof as Claire led Adrian, Nolan, Margaret, and Simon through the garden passage.

Simon walked with his hands visible under Nolan's watch.

Nobody trusted him enough to turn their back.

Adrian carried Evelyn's black key and the silver cuff link.

The greenhouse door was already open.

Claire stopped everyone before they entered.

A single lamp glowed inside.

On the central table sat a fresh cup of coffee.

Steam still rose from it.

Someone had arrived first.

Claire looked at Margaret.

"Who else knew?"

Margaret shook her head.

"Only Evelyn, Daniel, and me."

Claire's face tightened at her father's name.

They entered slowly.

Rows of citrus trees and winter flowers created deep shadows beneath the glass.

Adrian found the vault beneath an old stone potting bench.

It did not resemble a safe.

It looked like a cast-iron drainage cover shaped as a four-point star.

Claire handed him Evelyn's key.

Adrian inserted it into one side.

He pressed the silver cuff link into the matching slot.

The mechanism released with a heavy click.

Beneath the cover was a sealed metal case.

Nolan exhaled.

"Please tell me this one is not empty."

Adrian opened it.

Inside were three handwritten ledgers, several flash drives, and a stack of signed board documents.

Claire took the top ledger.

The first page carried Charles Vale's signature.

The second carried Daniel Hart's.

Then came hundreds of entries showing payments, private favors, controlled votes, and people placed inside companies, charities, and security teams.

No graphic crime was described.

The danger came from how ordinary the entries looked.

A consulting fee here.

A temporary contract there.

A donation redirected quietly.

Years of influence disguised as paperwork.

Nolan scanned one page.

"This could bring down half the board."

Simon answered from behind him.

"More than half."

Claire flipped to the most recent section.

One name appeared again and again.

MARGARET DAVENPORT.

Adrian looked at her.

Margaret did not deny it.

"I carried messages for them."

"For who?" Adrian asked.

"For Charles at first."

She swallowed.

"Then for Daniel."

Claire looked up sharply.

Margaret continued.

"Later, Victor forced his way into the network after Charles died."

Simon shook his head.

"Forced is generous."

Margaret glared at him.

Claire turned another page.

Then she stopped.

At the bottom was an entry dated eleven months earlier.

CLAIRE HART - HOUSE PLACEMENT.

Approved by D.H.

Observed by S.C.

Adrian looked at Simon.

"You were assigned to watch her."

Simon gave a small shrug.

"I never said I was proud of it."

Nolan stepped closer to him.

"You seemed proud five minutes ago."

Claire kept reading.

The next entry contained a note.

IF CLAIRE FINDS THE ARCHIVE, NORTHSTAR ENDS.

She looked at Margaret.

"My father wanted me to find this."

Margaret nodded.

"Yes."

"Then why not contact me directly?"

A man's voice answered from the far end of the greenhouse.

"Because I did not know who was watching you."

Claire froze.

Adrian turned.

An older man stepped out from behind the citrus trees.

He had silver hair, a weathered face, and Claire's unmistakable grey eyes.

Claire did not breathe.

Margaret whispered.

"Daniel."

The man looked at Claire as if eleven missing years had collapsed into one second.

"Hello, Claire."

May you like

Before she could answer, headlights flooded the greenhouse from the garden drive.

Victor Sloane had arrived.
